Archaeologist. Runner, reader, TTRPG GM/player, sports fan, and cook. Opinions are my own.
This is the first time I’ve learned about three-cueing (I learned to read in the early 80s via phonics) I have to agree that this approach seems designed to make poor readers
ever since I learned about three-cueing I've developed infinitely more patience for replies on social media. mfers literally do not know how to read. people are walking around conjuring random meanings into words they don't know, and they don't know a lot of words. it's crazy

Draw Steel's art description guide isn't just a new approach to alt-text. It synthesizes museum-tested accessibility with an eye towards poetry and metaphor.

Lin spoke with @dreamwisp.bsky.social about MCDM's mission-in-progress and creating "more visceral and tactile" descriptions.
Draw Steel sets new standards for alt text in their books
A deep dive into what an Art Description is, how it works, and who it’s for, including an interview with alt text writer, Jen Kretchmer.

It's going REALLY WELL. :D

The response has been amazing, tons of activity. Getting The Delian Tomb out at the same time? And dropping the first episode of the Liveplay all on the same day? That seems to be huge. Tons of people already running the adventure! And they seem to like it! :D
Hope launch is all going well.

So, yeah, longer thread coming tomorrow after I have slept, because this whole team has been working SO hard to get this out, but Draw Steel introduces Art Description, a new form of image description combining alt text and new standards based on art museum best practices for image description.

Check out Jason and the Gauntlet folks if you’re interested in TTRPGs
This year has been total dog shit in many ways, but one thing I'm happy about is our podcast output at The Gauntlet. Across our three shows, we've put out 38 new episodes so far in 2025. (1/)

I know that maybe 5 people are interested in my experiments with Pandoc and LaTeX to make simple PDFs and epubs. This morning I've found a new solution that's much quicker and easier than what I've been doing for the past two years.

In the wake of @bigbadcon.bsky.social's 2025 hiatus announcement, I discuss something I think we need to start expecting from #TTRPG conventions: significantly better ventilation.
Clearing the Air
Last week, organizers announced on social media that Big Bad Con (an annual game convention held in the fall Burlingame, Calif.) and Big Bad Online (a TTRPG-related panel discussion series streamed on...

“…he once threw nearly 500 pitches in an eight-day span, including a 12-inning, 194-pitch complete game…”

I know this sort of overuse of talented pitching is common but it’s quite stark to see it put this way.

I worked at a small video store in the mid 90s. The snap, of the plastic cases, the mechanical sound of the VCR. Even the process of counting cash to close out the register.
what’s your favorite instance of haptic nostalgia—the poignant memory of the physicality of an obsolete thing—like dialing a rotary phone, shifting gears in a manual transmission, opening a soda can with a pull ring?

I played Celia, who performed up-close street magic tricks. Not actual spells but proper sleight of hand/misdirection. I like how these sorts of tricks in real life can be inspiring or unsettling.
I have a bard that's a speech writer and fiery orator. Others include a storyteller, a sculptor, a historical researcher, a juggler, a ribbon dancer, and one who uses his épée like a singing saw when he's not stabbing people with it.

Tell me all about your non-singing, non-instrument playing bards!
BARDS CAN BE UNIQUE!

Bards are supposedly known as “Jack of All Trades”. You don’t need an instrument to be a bard—you have a wide array of different art styles at your disposal that don’t need to be music. #DnD

I bring this up in the piece, actually. There's no point in saving a Scrooge who is too old and frail not to be able to earn his redemption over time, so it's very likely the Scrooge of the original novella is in his 50s and in at least okayish health. He needs to live long enough to become beloved.
I like that one but GCS is a bit too “healthy” for the role of Scrooge. He looks more like he could play the ghost of Christmas present. I like Scrooge with Albert Finney…

Watching the progression of the treatment for HIV has been astonishing. As a kid I remember hearing about this scary disease from an episode of Phil Donahue that my mom was watching. I grew up in northern Indiana - just a few years younger than Ryan White. Then Magic, Freddie, and Princess Diana.

1970s USA. A disease blazes through the queer and party scenes of SF and NYC. "Gay plague."

80s. It has a name: HIV/AIDS. It's "God's punishment for sin." They suffered, dying without dignity, sometimes alone because they were abandoned or the last of their group to go.

Then Ryan White happened.
