In Intriguing Furniture news: yesterday I visited Lichfield Cathedral and found a new 13 metre long table made from a 5000-year-old oak log discovered perfectly preserved in a peat bog in 2016. The cut planks took 9 months to dry out, losing 2 tonnes of weight in the process. Definitely haunted...

#AshmoleanAdvent Day 19: Chestnut Netsuke

This small Japanese wooden netsuke takes the form of a chestnut. Netsuke were used to attach a medicine box, pipe, or tobacco pouch to the obi (sash) of a kimono.

A very small, 1" square reindeer from September 2019. Part of a set of thirty animals, one for each day of the month, all 1" square. Pencil on marker paper.

This is not a model. Or a shabby taxidermized modern rhino. This is a "fossilised" Woolly Rhinoceros, discovered in Starunia mine in Carpathian Ukraine (then Poland) in 1929. Dating to the Pleistocene, its exquisite preservation is owed to a mixture of brine, oil & clay. Held on display in Krakow. 🧵
