During the shutdown would be a fantastic time to establish a shadow government and tell people what you can offer.

Accountability
Environmental Urgency
Breaking up monopolies to reduce prices
Free Healthcare
UBI
A broader social safety net
Rebuilding the commerce Trump destroyed
Repealing tariffs

"In 2002, you could go to Walmart and get called a 'fucking terrorist' by my dad!"
every single person claiming to yearn for this would kill themselves if they were subjected to the tyranny of the 56k modem for one hour
This is doing numbers on social media right now and it's so depressing how people truly yearn for this shit and want to preserve that feeling indefinitely like a mausoleum of false memories.

The magical college educated liberal leftist technology will save us!

These people are plainly insane
This conspiracy belief picked up steam in 2020 via QAnon and spread through Trump’s base. It's easier to believe this horseshit when your society doesn't provide universal healthcare—even in a pandemic—and you live on the edge of medical bankruptcy or death. Now he's feeding their fear-driven hope.
I know a lot of people won’t click through to read about “med beds” so here’s the crucial quote to explain how fucking crazy this is.

Trump just posted an AI video of himself promising every American access to this.

The last time Trump sent Feds to Portland; I was an emergency dispatcher for the city/county.

It radicalized me; what I was seeing/hearing/dispatching didn’t match the narrative.

Proud Boys/Patriot Prayer were the REAL issue.

Abolish ICE.

Oh, and there’s this: gizmodo.com/donald-trump...
Homeland Security Admits It Tried to Manufacture Fake Terrorists for Trump
A new Homeland Security report details orders to connect protesters arrested in Portland to one another in service of the Trump's imaginary antifa plot.

They want you mad at trans people and immigrants so you don’t think about them shifting wealth from the bottom to the top with every move they make.

And Trump’s trillions transfer is accelerating the process.

IMO many Americans don't even buy guns for personal protection or to defend themselves against a tyrannical government. They simply have a shopping addiction

#UBI would be worth it for this alone. You might have to pay me to not work too much if the people I worked with *actually wanted to be there*. The right people make taking out the trash fun, assholes can ruin anything.
Consider the implications of providing the power to say no and still live to every worker, thanks to a sufficiently high universal basic income. YOU would choose to do whatever work you choose at the pay you agree to, and everyone around you in your place of work would also be choosing to be there.
With universal basic income, work environments would be full of people actually wanting to be there

It is just straight hits here today, first time I have checked in ages 😆

“Because a computer can’t just do it for you” and “it is the process as much as the outcome” to start with.
This is my specific worry about the current trajectory.

"Why learn any of the cool human talents when a computer can just do that for you?" is a completely rational statement when the importance of the humanities have been overshadowed by the need for credentials and status.

This. This all day. Those who remember BBSes and USENET and the AOL waves know.
We won't. The troll dynamic is essentially unchanged since the days of USENET, because the goal is the same: disrupt civil discourse and waste other people's time. There's nothing I've seen from troll recently that I didn't see 30 years ago in a newsgroup.

This theory 💯 checks out to me. How to test?
My theory is that some of the most dangerous people in America are smart, introverted techies who never understood why anyone majored in the liberal arts in college, graduated college and began reading and misunderstanding texts liberal arts majors were taught to read properly, and became fascists.

Behold, Balaji, the most pathetic of bootlickers. Elon fans are the most pitiable people on this entire planet. Suckers and sycophants. Willing to sell themselves into slavery for the self-serving fantasies of a megalomaniacal sociopath.
Balaji Srinivasan suggests giving Elon Musk “control of a huge swath of land surrounding Starbase, Texas” & designate that land as “a military base or … similar, so that [Musk] can fence it off & determine at his sole discretion who can enter.” Then replicate in other states w/ other Tech Bros. 1/
