Last Friday I appeared before a Senate committee to talk about the Commonwealth's proposed changes to FOI laws @withmeaa.bsky.social, in my capacity as a working freelance journalist. The changes copy FOI regimes at the state level -- two hours later, one of those states hit me with a charge:

Shocking news. ‘Chemical linked to low sperm count, obesity & cancer found in dummies, tests find’. Meanwhile effective marketing of dummies means mums are told dont comfort at the breast, tho it is the safest comforter & comes with a mother & milk not cancer causing chemicals. #auspol #bmscode

I’m sure this point has been made elsewhere but not only did they openly lie about how many recommendations were in the robodebt final report, the one they erased was to reform FOI and now they’re heading in the opposite direction. Surprise is not a feature of my reaction.

It is a great and detailed account of the #Robodebt debacle.
Not only was Robodebt a colossal failure in raising the revenue it was promised to, it remains a stark reminder of how our governments treat the most vulnerable in our society.

The "sensible centre" is not the same as evidence-based policy.

With online gambling, junk food advertising or incarcerating children, evidence of harm is clear, but centrist positions are defined by politics rather than evidence.
