Do Aust'n health professionals get guidance from their prof associations wrt their obligations under the I'national Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes? In 2021, the ACCC determined they do, so we set out to find out for sure.

🧵3/3 This is timely given the current work in Australia to restrict the marketing of infant formula and what the formula industry has to say about it. You can read what they are saying about the matter (publicly) here ➡️ www.accc.gov.au/public-regis... and ➡️ www.health.gov.au/resources/pu...

🧵2/3 The NZ govt bowed to lobbying, departing from the revised standard to limit misleading labels on formula tins. Evidence of many meetings between formula execs and NZ ministers. Strong regulation of lobbying needed to safeguard infant health from profit. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

To demonstrate my point - here is a collection of media headings from the last week. If you have seen any that are the counterpoint aside from Clare's (above) I'd love to hear about them 🙏

3/3 News articles about the lack of formula supply are what the formula industry loves - elevation of importance and 'life-saving' nature of the tinned powder. Plus, the halo effect for donating their product. Meanwhile, women are left malnourished, unsupported and even separated from their babies.
June 27, 2025 at 3:27 AM
2/3 While I understand there will be a need for formula to be supplied, given the high loss of women's lives in this protracted, man-made conflict, I wonder where the media callout is for better support of women (provision of safe space and counselling) and protection of breastfeeding?
June 27, 2025 at 3:27 AM
1/3 Thanks for writing this @clarepatton.bsky.social I've been watching the recent media blitz on starving babies in Gaza with the usual emphasis on lack of formula supplies. www.thejournal.ie/readme/gaza-...
