"Things are being made linearly worse in the pursuit of growth in every aspect of our digital lives, and it’s because everything must grow, at all costs, at all times, unrelentingly, even if it makes the technology we use every day consistently harmful."
Newsletter: Our digital lives are unregulated growth-hacked ecological disasters. The modern tech ecosystem's growth-at-all-costs mindset is actively harming billions of people, pushing them toward authoritarianism for profit. We must fight back.

In the last year, I’ve spent about 200,000 words on a kind of personal journey where I’ve tried again and again to work out why everything digital feels so broken, and why it seems to keep getting wor...

“Abortion debt” is probably not a phrase you have heard. But post-Dobbs, it’s becoming more of a reality. And it’s only going to get worse.

That’s why @debtcollective.bsky.social is collaborating with frontline abortion funds and providers to eliminate and prevent $50,000 in abortion debt. 🧵

USians in Europe: Help? I'm trying to get a ticket to the #UWCL game in Madrid, and the Real Madrid site is asking me for an ID number. Uh? What does that mean?

me reading the "what was Jesus' childhood home" question out loud to my partner and going "UH they told me his NAME was Jesus OF NAZARETH" like wowooowowow that youth training kicks right in sometimes 🤣

fifteen out of fifteen, baby. All of that recovering Catholic childhood religious education really pays off sometimes. (Whatever that means for this? Apparently most people in my country do not know things? No one can be surprised by THAT.)

If you didn't know, now you know. (Unless you come from a union family, you probably didn't know.)
I knew a lady in HR who would go to junior staffers and tell them “before important negotiations or other important conversations with your manager, come rehearse the convo with me so you can be more effective.” And then she’d snitch to managers like me. I was shook!

This writer follows twelve (12) people on Bluesky. They've been here a month and posted twice.

It's like writing about how mid the food is in New York compared to your hometown and not revealing that the only food you ate in New York was a bag of chips you bought at the airport during a layover.

american politics has been in a period of high engagement and high polarization for nearly a quarter-century and this means that all national elections are going to be nailbiters, barring some insane exogenous shock, which is what you had in 2008.

“why is the election a coin flip”

every single presidential election since 2000 — basically other than 2008 — has been essentially a coin flip in the polls. if you ignore ‘08, the last time the outcome was essentially known in advance was in *1996*

I am ... stunned and furious with, and embarassed by, all of my friends cancelling subscriptions. It only harms the journalists, not the billionaires. I don't even know what to say anymore, but I'm apopleptic right now and about to lose friends over their fast but very, very poor decisions.

amid all the talk about how people support media, a reminder: *small* outlets like @bolts.bsky.social thrive on and need reader support...

... & I promise you whatever other niche website you love but haven't subscribed to does as well. Consider them!

Refreshing to know that even at WaPo, when the ownership class’s underlings trot out a shitty, craven memo about a shitty, craven business decision, the people who actually do the work immediately recognize bullshit.

A Radical Approach to Flooding in the UK: Give Land Back to the Sea
When a huge tract of land on the Somerset coast was deliberately flooded, the project was slammed as “ridiculous” by a local lawmaker. But the results have been transformative.

It shows any free link to an otherwise paywalled article that’s shared by anyone on Bluesky. It has legit changed how I read the news.

#ouch! #Oscars2024 and also, just Oscars.
“Diane Warren, who received her fifteenth nomination for Best Original Song, said that “The Fire Inside,” her anthem from “Flamin’ Hot”—a movie about the creation of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos—is “my anthem too.””
Can You Really Want an Oscar Too Much?
It’s the ultimate paradox of campaigning: an actor must somehow be dedicated but not try-hard, authentic but not award-hungry.
