Je devais faire cette mise au point

En à peine douze ans, la capacité des forêts européennes à absorber le carbone atmosphérique a chuté de 27 %. Je ne sais pas si vous vous rendez compte des conséquences de ce que je viens d'écrire.

Literature review without acknowledgement, pushed to the obscene
Revisiting last week’s open problems scandal, I wrote about LLMs as Lore Laundering Machines and why some are blind to the novelty whitewashing.

A very hungry planet! 🪐

What appears to be a ripple in space is actually a newborn planet, eating its way through its dusty cradle around a younger version of our Sun 🌞

After a few more precovery observations, and follow-ups, it became clear this object is on a hyperbolic trajectory through the solar system. This means the eccentricity is > 1. Early data was suggesting it was as high as 10! This is by far the highest eccentricity of any object ever discovered.

As a pathological optimist, I'll stick to this explanation until my next look at the 2026 NSF budget proposal
One of my friends noted early on, in relation to the DoD removing photos of the Enola Gay because it had the word ' gay', that no one does malicious compliance quite like the DoD.

Un glacier et un pan de montagne dans la vallée, une centaine de maisons disparues... Une évacuation préventive (depuis une dizaine de jours je crois)
Maybe > 100 buildings buried! 😱

and some reassuring (no!) flow statistics from Lonza river 😰 👇
Maybe >~100 🏠 buried by the glacier+rockfall collapse in Blatten (polygon quickly drawn from 📷 pomona.ch). Upstream part of village spared. But the Lonza River is now dammed. Over the last month it flew at ~5m3/s, expected to increase 2-3x in June. At 10 m3/s, it's 1M m3 every 28 hours.

🧪 Tip: You have the right to contest a grant termination, even though NSF says you don't. 🧵

On Friday, NSF terminated 402 grants (per Musk's DOGE).

The notification letters had one of the most egregious violations of fed regulations I've seen so far in these cases:

"not subject to appeal"
Here's a copy of an NSF grant termination notice that went out today. "NSF is issuing this termination to protect the interests of the government pursuant...on the basis that they no longer effectuate the program goals or agency priorities." Not subject to appeal. #HigherEd #AcademicSky
