Searching for joy
Pinned
Greetings fellow travelers. I’m excited to be on this path with you.

I’m interested in spiritual resistance to the industrial age. Happiness and joy. Small business and household economics. Healing from trauma. MTB biking. Rock climbing. Nature. Beauty and art. Seen here w my middle child
I saw you waiting to turn left into Starbucks this morning, and I almost slowed down to let you get through. But then I realized I can’t spend my life compensating for your bad choices.

French Senator Claude Malhuret:

"Washington has become Nero’s court, with an incendiary emperor, submissive courtiers and a jester high on ketamine... We were at war with a dictator, we are now at war with a dictator backed by a traitor."

My three girls each inherited ~$90k in an IRA Roth from their great grandmother. My wife is a big believer in the value of higher education. I am also a believer, but only if the student understands why they are there and also understands the value. Here is the opportunity cost…

4 mile walk on Christmas Eve. This is about as urban as it gets in Wyoming. Basketball stadium on the right and the UW Heritage Museum on the left.

I had a wonderful time chatting with the great @drmoore.bsky.social about Donald Trump and the 2024 election, the various pathologies afflicting MAGA evangelicals, the scourge of Christian nationalism, the tragic effect that runaway polarization is having on our relationships, and much more.

I’m not an artist. I enjoy storytelling and have dabbled in some (really amateurish) film shooting. Here’s my best attempt to document my dad’s art on location in Wyoming. (8 minutes)

Some five-word horror stories for Friday the 13th:

Running out of tea bags
Someone talking in a lift
Unexpected knock on the door
Biscuit falling into your brew
Stuck on rail replacement bus
Forgetting to take an umbrella

While my transgressions are relatively minor, I have chosen to flee the X and the shame of my behavior there
I’ve been studying the habits of various types of geese for many years and all of them have been quite loud but I think one of the most admirable things about them is, despite this disposition, they will never fire off a mouthy response to something on the internet without properly reading it.

One part of social media that is strange is the feeling that there is no such thing as an original thought. That basically everything I could say has already been said - and probably better - by someone else.

This is a killer of creativity. Don’t let these thoughts win!

Choose joy. Find joy.

Don’t ignore the pain inside or without. But don’t wait for the pain to disappear before you find joy.

Though, sometimes it’s like looking for pearls in a pool of shit.

Oftentimes joy is found in tiny packages. Flowers. Hug. Smile. Hello. The breeze. Sunshine. Animals.
