Seattle voters showed up big this year — and most dropped ballots in drop boxes, not the mail. Maybe it’s time to invest in this system the same way we strengthened vote-by-mail by removing postage.

MLKC voters answered the call! 2025 Seattle turnout soars to nearly 55%, while King County approaches forecasted 45% - NPI's Cascadia Advocate
A significant percentage of voters in Washington State's largest county answered the call to get their ballots in, more than doubling voter turnout in the span of just a few hours.

A possible explanation for Seattle’s slower ballot returns this year.
CHS Blog reports an unprecedented number of ballots were returned via drop boxes instead of mail — which helps explain why results are taking longer to process:

Seattle’s ballot drop box system feels painfully inefficient. We need more voter education on voting early & more frequent ballot pickups. It’s wild that Election Day ballots still haven’t been counted.

According to King County elections they had "a LOT" of dropbox activity in this election (emphasis theirs). They expect there's probably another 230-235K ballots countywide, so probably 115K or so in Seattle. Tonight will be a drop of 50-55K countywide, 25K or so in Seattle.

Congratulations to all the Democratic candidates who won tonight. It’s a reminder that when we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win. We’ve still got plenty of work to do, but the future looks a little bit brighter.

Three years ago we opened the first bike project that was started and finished during my initial two months as Director of SDOT. The project completed the cycletrack around Green Lake by placing concrete barriers to take a small slice of Aurora for bikes on the east side of the lake.

Democracy can be absolutely fucking beautiful when we let it work — when we focus on real solutions for everyday people and let candidates connect with voters.

We are just one day out from the Seattle local elections! Only 17.6% of King County voters and just under 20% of Seattle voters have returned their ballots. So far, only 1 in 17 young gen Z voters have voted, compared to more than 1 in 3 boomers. Don't forget to vote if you are eligible and want to.

Oof. Big miss from KUOW. The story reads like half gotcha and half fan club, with none of the objectivity or rigor you’d expect from public radio.
Bruce Harrell’s campaign is using a KUOW story to paint Katie Wilson as secretly rich. The problem? It isn’t true. Her parents only started helping with childcare this year, not her bills, and KUOW has since added context after refusing to correct the piece.
How a KUOW Story Became a Weapon in the Mayoral Race
On October 21, KUOW published a story with the headline: “Katie Wilson can barely afford to live in Seattle. That's why she wants to be mayor.” The story then goes on to reveal that while she “speaks ...

Who transportation orgs are endorsing in the 2025 general election + WA Bikes snubs several bike champions?
Skip ahead to the endorsements: State Legislature Counties Cities Ballots are hitting mailboxes across Washington State, and Seattle has the opportunity to elect a mayor who is a people-powered champion for biking, walking, transit and affordability in Katie Wilson. While incumbent mayor Bruce Harrell is embroiled in a campaign finance scandal over apparent collusion with his big money "independent" PAC that's spending huge amounts on attack ads, Wilson's campaign has volunteers knocking on doors all over Seattle.

It has been 12 years since Lance David died biking to work here. I'll be thinking about him when I ride this safer route later today.
His tragic death spurred local West Seattle advocates to demand change, and to his credit Mayor Mike McGinn started this project — 3 mayors later it's finally done.
