🚨 NEW: The majority holder of the world's genetic sequence data is a bad actor who can cut off access to critics and competing services. We've tolerated this for years, and now it threatens the pandemic treaty. Time for WHO to step in. With @ctrlalttim.com: www.thinkglobalhealth.org/article/to-f...

BA.3.2 has arrived in the UK. One BA.3.2.2, collected October 5, was uploaded from Scotland today.

Same branch as recent BA.3.2.2 from Germany & Slovenia.

It has a few errors (S:ins214:ASDT is misread & ORF1a:E4388K is an artifact). Ignoring those, the one notable new mutation is N:N126K.

Closing these public analyses puts the world more in the dark and concretely harms surveillance as it becomes more difficult for variant spotters to contribute to global situational awareness. 4/5

On Oct 1, 2025, GISAID informed us that they had ended updates to the flat file of SARS-CoV-2 genomic sequences and associated metadata that we had used to update Nextstrain analyses since Feb 2020. GISAID's stated rationale was that their "resources are limited". 1/5

Slovenia just uploaded a BA.3.2.2 to GISAID.

It is most closely linked to the 2 German BA.3.2.2 from April and september and (a bit more distant) to a South African one from September.

GISAID is now blocking genomic sequencing access to critical resources like Nextstrain, Covspectrum, Outbreak-info, & others.

This makes us less safe, as live tracking of viral evolution remains critical for assessment of emerging threats. This needs to be escalated.
Bad. No justification, no communication, no standard procedures for making changes—just arbitrary pronouncements cutting off access to some of the most valuable resources we have.
And now NextStrain as well.

Next up, will GISAID start charging open-source community tools to have access?

That would completely shaft users who contributed to GISAID, where we never agreed to that and assumed GISAID would be good custodians of the data we contributed. They're not.

NZ wastewater COVID19 surveillance dashboard update. poops.nz The levels detected are relatively low and there is a mixed bag of variants tracked and reported, including the first detection of BA.3.2 in NZ (albeit just in one sample a few weeks ago & hasn’t been detected since.

🦠Heads up. BA.3.2 has arrived in NZ

BA.3.2 detected in Aotearoa New Zealand wastewater
3.2% for the week to 5 October

BA.3.2 is not shown in the fortnight to 19 Oct. However, variants with a national percentage of < 1% are not included so BA.3.2 is likely to still be circulating

Hij komt tot nog toe voornamelijk in West-Europa voor, zoals in België, Frankrijk en Spanje.

Not a majority for PE.1.4 in the NSW samples uploaded to GISAID, but close.

A second BA.3.2.2, which wasn't mentioned in the report.

Today 6 more BA.3.2.2 from Western Australia. Plus the second one from Germany, more than 5 months after its first.
There's a new BA.3.2.2 from South Africa today. For the most part, there's been little substantial change in BA.3.2 over the past few months—mostly synonymous mutations & very little happening in spike.

But this new one has 3 spike mutations & looks quite interesting. 1/6

After 3 months, South Africa has uploaded another BA.3.2.2.

It has 3 mutations in common with the Australian samples, which we haven't seen outside of Australia before. T1195C, C2592T and T6856C. So, it probably migrated after it gained those.

It gained some extra mutations after that.
