Nostalgia is a fundamentally fascist impulse. The left should never traffick in these tropes because when the we cannot bring the 50s back through science or magic, the far right will be offering a much more twisted version of the same vision.

Apparently my claim that the economy is definitely getting worse is overstated! Because of my reliance on popular social media narratives I was unduly certain when the signals are more mixed

Like there are lots of bad headwinds right now, but I don't know how you assess that in aggregate relative to other recent years.

This is one of those inconvenient truths: it’s a lot easier for various well-paid strategists and pundits to advise “stop saying Latinx” (a non-issue) versus “substantively change the media environment and people’s online consumption habits”

Economic sentiment was very positive in 2019 - little anxiety. Your explanation here relies on trends that span decades to describe a phenomenon that has fluctuated up and down with ephemeral public assessments of national economic performance.
