Eleven years ago, I wrote to Tom Stoppard to ask about this coup de théâtre from 1949. It took me down an unexpected rabbit hole - in memory of Stoppard, here's what I found.

RIP Dr. Nolan R. Williams (1983-2025) professor at Stanford. He was a pioneer in the treatment of depression and a friend. I read this Substack eulogy on him this morning, and I thought it really captured both the man and his brilliance.

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

Science fiction is the subset of fantasy where we are being fashionable about science. This is science fiction's own novum: the idea that "science" can be an aesthetic and that then-current models and ideologies of knowledge, both in form and content, can be a source of both constraint and excession

Leaving aside the variations of this hypothesis the elegance of the recent paper in Nature on the role of Lithium in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s (linking with the Amyloid hypothesis from the lab that first focused on AB42) is a remarkable piece of work that needs replication and human trials.

Let me tell you a story – one of the more haunting I’ve seen in 20 years of journalism. It’s about greed, death and denial. It took two years to unravel one doctor’s myth, a hospital’s complicity in creating it, and a documented trail of suspicious deaths…🧵

It's gonna happen everywhere with abortion bans. There isn't much slack in any of these systems and the areas with already tight supply are going to be hit the hardest. New docs might stop over for a few years, but will flee once they experience the cruelty.

I did some math in August & noticed that if we sell 5000 advent calendars, I can fund @skypeascientist.bsky.social 2025 without getting any grants. I wrote grants anyway, but I wanted some backup!

So far, 0 grants for 2025.
BUT!
We've sold 2,183 calendars!!

1/2 way funded!

Aw jeez, not this again.

According to this consultant, hospitals now *lose* an average of $304,312 per physician per year.

🤦🏻‍♂️

Guess it's time for another thread on budgetary gerrymandering.
