Take it easy. But take it.

He/Him/His
Conceived as a parody of the Hollywood eats its young movie, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) subverts this trope as the space between what you want and want you get opens up into psycho-sexual spectacle, and leads to a rather uncomfortable ending.

Inspired by Buddy Holly and Townes Van Zandt, Terry Allen's Lubbock (on Everything) has a dusted sound that no one heard coming in 1979, much less a double album that ranges from hard-luck character studies ("The Wolfman of Del Rio") to surreal artistic parables ("The Beautiful Waitress").

The creepy relationship at its center, along with a rather muddled political through line, relegates Three Days of the Condor (1975) to the second tier of 1970s-American-paranoia cinema, below films such as The Parallax View (1974) and Night Moves (1975).

If Spotify symbolized the major labels plowing a camera-surveilled 8-lane highway through the thickets and warrens of mp3s and blogs, their approval of A.I. will quickly populate those crowded roads with giant, ugly, gas-guzzling pickup trucks that you can't pass

With downers at the end of both sides, Willie Nelson, Phases and Stages (1974) tells a story out of a 70s breakup film. Side 1: the woman's emptiness gives way to self-doubt. Side 2: the man's acting self-reliant becomes one of those "scenes that we've all seen before - let me tell you some more"

I'm always happy to do collaborative songwriting, because it reminds me that my artistic expression is not limited by/to what I think of as my "self," but it can be hard to find people on that creative wavelength.

Two 1975 albums with not a song nor a feeling out of place, Waylon Jennings, Dreaming My Dreams, and Terry Allen, Juarez, have got a whole lot of soul, but when you cross the border, does that mean a thing? Allen may have removed the answer on the deleted last track of Juarez: "Myth my ass."

Miles in the Sky (1968) grooves on the late-60s ethos of letting it all hang out; Miles Davis leaves it up to Tony Williams's drumming to keep it together. Although the use of electric instruments feels more conceptual than concretized, here is the start of the path to those epic 70s jams.
