Author, actor, crossing guard
Read this. I do not live in Chicago now, but I grew up there and while it pains me to see what is going on there, I also feel proud about how Chicagoans are fighting back.
Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

You’ve probably heard the famous post- WWII poem, “First They Came.”

But have you seen this positive new adaptation by @bridgetmoixfcnl.bsky.social ?

Lisa Von Ahn writes how she found hope & inspiration for this moment in the poem. We hope you do too.

It’s ping pong, but you’re standing on the table — a pickleball lover
I resented pickleball less, when I realized it was just ping-pong.

"Pirates of Sausalito" ebook is free today and tomorrow on Amazon.

Hippie houseboaters in a waterfront shantytown in 1970s Sausalito resist eviction by developers determined to build luxury docks. Then, someone gets stabbed.

Imagine “Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test” meets “Murder, She Wrote.”

Earlier this month, I redesigned my book covers so they are more unified and “branded.”

The first image is as the covers are now, the second shows a more unified look, and the third adds a tagline.

I'd love to hear what you think.

What a fantastic book. I do not read many nonfiction books, but this read like a novel. I listened to it, as an audiobook and it was riveting. And as you say, brutal.
May Book Challenge (see OP in first comment. #BookSky #SomeHistory

“King Leopold’s Ghost,” by Adam Hochschild. A nonfiction classic that details the horrific crimes of the imperialist race to carve up Africa for plunder, territory, and glory. Absolutely brutal—and accurate—account.

Sausalito Houseboat Wars: What Really Happened?

Join me in Sausalito next Wednesday, April 9 @ 6 pm for a lively conversation with Books by the Bay’s Cheryl Potts — about the “houseboat wars,” turning true events into a novel, and more. There will be wine.

An important addition to the "abundance" conversation.
It's hard to believe anyone can talk about an abundance agenda without talking about patent reform. These monopolies are all about creating artificial scarcity cepr.net/publications...

I read that first quote out loud to two people, just yesterday.
This New Yorker piece about the Irish Famine has several paragraphs I found literally jaw-dropping (positive). This is a book review!! Good god!!!

Since I am a self-published author, I did not expect any of my four novels would show up here, but two did. It is pure theft.
As someone else said, I'm both flattered and furious.

Over the decades, I’ve interviewed hundreds of people for news stories, research, and more. I can count on my fingers, however, the number of times I’ve been interviewed as an author.

One of my favorites is one I wrote myself, so I decided to do that again. Enjoy.

Tomorrow, we open “Murder on the Bocce Court,” the ninth murder mystery I’ve performed in.

I have a small, but funny part as a French bocce player, and it’s a pleasure to just be an actor, instead of also writing and directing. Though I did design the poster for the play.

This is a valuable conversation about young men and how their struggles and their "longing for belonging" leave them vulnerable to right-wing movements.
Young men are particularly vulnerable to far right radicalization. If we want to prevent the rise of the next generation of Brownshirts, we need to pay attention to the ways in which boys are suffering. I wrote about it here. dashkaslater.substack.com/p/young-men-...

This is easy to forget.
One of the biggest mistakes left-leaning people make: when they think about "messaging" or "branding," they think about clever words & phrases. But the key to successful messaging is *power*, ie, the capacity to thrust your message into eyes/ears. Repetition, not cleverness, is the key to success.
