Posts like this about biking in Dutch cities are routinely replied to with comments like “well, they have the big advantage of being relatively flat.”

The Dutch also have the big advantage of not constantly making excuses about why they can’t make clearly smarter city-making decisions. #Leadership
People riding bikes along a canal in Utrecht, Netherlands. Even if the #Dutch DID make excuses, they would point out that wind is often as much of a challenge as hills. And that e-bikes address the challenges of topography.

Increasingly deadly vehicles, dumb laws, and irresponsible driving equal people being injured and killed.

The omnibus Bill 60 is (almost) impressive how many terrible proposals it's bundling together that will make life worse for Ontarians. And still hurting from their court defeat, Ford believes packaging it as more bikes v cars culture war is a 905 political winner.

Remember last year when the Ontario government promised they would "unveil a plan to work with our municipal partners around the province" to develop a "common sense, evidence-based bike lane policy"?

Here's their plan: roads are for cars.
Opinion | Ontario’s transport minister: We should only be putting bike lanes in places that make sense Oct. 13, 2024 In short, what we need is a common sense, evidence-based bike lane policy — one that takes all the very real concerns about bike lanes on main streets into account. That’s why, in the next few days, our government will unveil our plan to work with our municipal partners around the province to ensure bike lanes are introduced in a way that reflects the need of the entire community: Cyclists, drivers, transit user and local businesses. Bike lanes are part of the solution when it comes to getting people moving. But here in Ontario — a place where most commuters still drive and where cold winters make cycling impractical for much of the year — we need to be realistic about where they should go. That’s what we’re going to do. Bill 60, Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act, 2025 Prohibition re reduction of lanes 195.3 (1) Except as permitted by the regulations, a municipality shall not, by by-law or otherwise, reduce or permit a reduction in the number of marked lanes available for travel by motor vehicles on a highway or a portion of a highway under the municipality’s jurisdiction and control for any of the following purposes: 1. A bicycle lane. 2. Any other prescribed purpose.

Bill 212 at least pretended it would set criteria for new bike lanes. Bill 60 drops the pretense. Cycle Toronto deputed at Executive Committee to warn about the poison pill that would take power away from people and their communities and give it to cars.

Make no mistake. The bike lane provisions in Bill 60 are bad for Toronto. But they're WORSE for the rest of the province which to-date has been largely unscathed in Bill 212's aftermath. Kudos to @bikeottawa.bsky.social and advocates fighting back across Ontario.

Have you heard of “The Populist Playbook?”

A few years ago, I posted what I still consider one of my most important messages.

It was about “The Populist Playbook” that I’ve watched play out often over my 33+ years of city planning.

Since then, it’s only gotten worse.

Do the steps sound familiar?
Step 1: deliberately scare people with misinformation and lies about what a proposed policy or plan will do. Step2: wait for misinformed people to complain. Step 3: say that “clearly people are concerned,“ so we should “listen to the people“ and reject the plan. The Populist Playbook Step 4: mainstream media “reports the controversy” rather than the fact it was manufactured, and the amplify the quotes of those who manufactured it.. Step5: other elected leaders who know the truth, still vote against the good plan or policy, because they’re too afraid of the “heat.“
