All NIDA F31 diversity scholars officially losing their funding...

I barely have words.

Expected at this point but so so disappointing and unfair. We are effectively punishing some of America's best science students for telling the government they are from an underrepresented community.

A particular highlight of #StandUpForScience2025 was hearing @therealdrdukes.bsky.social speak. Science is strengthened by equity, inclusion, and justice. Now more than ever, we need to protect and empower the next generation of diverse scientists!

People keep saying oh your research program is probably safe. No it’s not. There’s is no “safe” research program unless they are all decided by merit and not political whim (which is how it was done until Jan 20th).
The goal is to dismantle American universities.
The National Cancer Institute (part of NIH) released new guidelines for "controversial, high-profile or sensitive" keywords that require "review prior to publication" if included in a product or materials.

Keywords include abortion, obesity, and peanut allergies.

In case you are worried about logistics, like childcare, we are thrilled to partner with Aelis Farma who will cover the costs of onsite childcare for those in need via their Daycare Initiative. As someone who lugged my kids around to conferences, I am so excited and proud #EBPS2025 will offer this.
Need something warm and sunny to look forward to? Join me in Almeria, Spain in September at my favorite meeting, #EBPS2025! ebps2025.com

Check out the awesome lineup of plenary/awardee lectures. 👇

And help us make it even more exciting by submitting a symposium proposal. Deadline January 20.
There is one month to submit your symposium proposals for #EBPS2025. Find all the information for our September meeting, on our new conference website! www.ebps2025.com

Instead, these neurons are uniquely engaged in parallel to dopamine neurons to contribute motivational drive under multivalent decision contexts - they signal something more akin to motivational saliency, an integration of appetitive and aversive states.

Critically, Margaret found that GABA neurons are not simply a read out of salience or intensity, because unpredicted shocks and rewards of varying intensities don't evoke a scaled GABA response.

So excited to share my first project on VTA GABA neurons!
Sad to miss #ACNP2024 but check out our new studies by the amazing @margestelzner.bsky.social - comparing dopamine vs GABA neurons in the VTA in different forms of learning - our results support an overall re-evaluation of midbrain representation of valence and appetitive motivation (thread)

It is coming - and we are not ready. We could never have enough time to prepare. Because there can never be enough time to battle time itself. Relentless. Bending us along its trajectory without relief. Will we break? We cannot. We must not. For if we break, who will roast these jams?

• Google TV calls it Motion Enhancement
• Vizio calls it Smooth Motion Effect.

🚨 Called AND wrote to my House Rep to vote NO on HR.9495, which would allow president to revoke tax-exempt status of institutions (like NEWS orgs and UNIVERSITIES) deemed “terrorist-supporting” (arbitrarily). Losing tax-exempt status would be disastrous. Please call or write to yours, too

Which is why I'm going to need all the scientists to stop behaving as though there is a sex binary as opposed to a sex spectrum. Yes, in mammals! And especially in whatever the heck features of mammals you study
One of the things that I'm seeing as a huge commonality among terf and terf-adjacent folks in philosophy is the way that they sneak a kind of bio-essentialist teleology into their definitions of sex, which they then present as "objective truth." Every damn one of them does this in some form.
So Gary Francione published a transphobic diatribe whining about transness being a “metaphysical/spiritual” belief etc. Then he goes and drops this plainly normative definition of “sex”, which has clearly homophobic and sexist (as well as transphobic) implications: “the FACT of the matter.” 🙃
