I taught close-reading for the first time in awhile recently and I enjoyed seeing how revelatory it felt for some students: a secret language, right under the surface! As Dan writes, "Learning to see what lies hidden before our eyes is part of the magic of close reading."

So many of us would not be here without these programs. I got a FLAS and Fulbright-Hays in graduate school and would not be the same person or scholar without them. Entire careers destroyed, among current DOE employees and future academics alike, in one fell swoop.
Getting informal reports that as part of the mass layoffs at the Department of Education, the International and Foreign Language Education (IFLE) Office has been "abolished."

IFLE administers Title VI and Fulbright-Hays grant and fellowship programs.

A disaster.

$2 TRILLION IN CUTS.
