I’m back in your screens, talking about Allie 🫶🏻 and the importance of doing real things we know can save lives, like using tech and street design to slow drivers. 🚗

It’s why we’re walking on Nov 16 to honor victims and call for slowing down. #StopSuperSpeeders

If I knew nothing else about Mamdani and just read these quotes from him about cars I'd still adamantly vote for him if I lived in NYC.
I’ve been wanting to go back and re-listen to my audio recording of a 2023 Vision Zero Cities Conference panel and pull out anything else that was interesting.

I finally got around to doing that. And turns out, there was a lot more worth sharing.

If he gets elected mayor, Mamdani’s support for banning parking near intersections citywide could undo a bureaucratic knot at the Department of Transportation, whose leaders have vigorously pushed back against the movement fighting for the safety measure.

The next mayor will have to overcome a deeply entrenched bureaucracy opposed to the common-sense policy.

Trigger warning.

“In crashes, SUVs are more likely to strike vital organs in the core of adults’ bodies & heads of children. Hitting pedestrians above their center of gravity means they’re more likely to be knocked forward & down and then be driven over.”

Plus more likely to hit in the 1st place.

This includes new memorials for loved ones who were killed while bicycling sometime in the past year and a half, plus previous memorials that were in need of care and replacement. ❤️‍🩹

With a track record like this, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that VIP plate 632 in @mayorbowser.bsky.social’s DC didn’t stop when I was in the (4-way stop) crosswalk with my kid this morning.

Car crashes are the second leading cause of death of American children. And it's entirely preventable.

Education and behavior change alone won't stop it. A major problem is road design.

I'm so glad the issue is reaching more mainstream conversations. www.sciencefriday.com/segments/kil...

Twice as many children die in car crashes than from all pediatric cancers combined. This does not count the long term health effects of breathing exhaust, brake and tire particles or the loss of physical activity and independence from living in a world hostile to traveling outside of a car.
