Finally a few decent lightning strikes! Had been a quiet storm year for Chicago thus far.

Speaking of quiet, usually when you get a tower strike you hear some bigtime thunder, but for whatever reason a few of those were really oddly hushed (relatively, in my opinion)

Here's another from the wee hours of the morning. This image is 4 separate lightning photos captured across 15 minutes then blended. In each shot, one of Sears' antenna and one of the Hancock's antenna are getting hit.

Lightning does strike some places twice, and often.

Yesterday, June 28, 2025, Juston Drake and I documented several tornadoes near the communities of Clear Lake and Gary, South Dakota.
Here some photos we took during the chase. Going to be working a bit on the long format YouTube video. #sdwx

If you live somewhere with clear skies and no smoke (sorry chicago) now would be an ideal time to point a camera north (pics from a maine webcam)

The HUXt model shows a potential CME merger around the main M8.2 CME which should arrive sometime Sunday June 1 18 UT.

HUXt is almost 100% sure this CME will arrive and is giving a + 7/-5 hr uncertainty around the arrival time.

Things could get VERY interesting tomorrow.

Video of the dust storm coming into Chicago this evening, as seen around Montrose Point — featuring birds, toad sounds, and people catching a fish.

What a wild evening. Never experienced a dust storm in Chicago before. Happened to be in a good spot (in terms of photography at least) as it approached and passed through

I managed one shot of the cotton candy cumulonimbus before darker, low-level clouds slid into the top of the frame. It was a gorgeous, surreal moment to see rain still falling over the east side of downtown, while fluffy pink clouds and blue sky belied the strength of the storm still in progress

An infographic on this afternoon/evening's storm potential from the NWS Chicago Office.

Keep I mind, the "ingredients" for strong storms will be present in the atmosphere, the question is (usually) whether they'll "mix" together to create storms.

The economics associated with weather / climate hazard research, data collection, and building codes should never be considered as a "spend".

This is an investment.

The more we learn will directly translate to saved lives and reduced loss costs because we've proactively taken mitigative action.

Good evening, a National Weather Service damage survey team has confirmed 2 brief tornadoes over far southern Iroquois County from Wednesday's storms. The NWS greatly appreciates the assistance provided by emergency management from Iroquois and Ford Counties. #ilwx

And there you have it. At least a dozen tornadic supercells in an STP bullseye of 9, smack dab in the center of an SPC High Risk. We can stop complaining now, or rejoice, or just appreciate the NWS.
