One regular Zinger Burger Box meal = $NZD18.99 ($USD10.67)
$USD1t ÷ $USD10.67 = 9.37207123 x 10¹⁰ meals
9.37207123 x 10¹⁰ meals ÷ 8.2 billion people = 11.429 meals per person

It is an area rich in Māori culture though. This is a memorial to the Aotea waka — one of ships which originally bought Māori to Aotearoa — which many Taranaki iwi whakapapa to.

PATEA: I have nothing bad to say about Patea.

It’s a lovely little place which was, in the 1920s, the largest cheese exporting port in the world.

Now thanks to capitalism: no port, no cheese, no jobs.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Luxon, a man who just looks stoked to be there ("there" being anywhere), isn't being straight with us.

Has anyone checked to see if someone hasn't put an insole into one of his shoes but not the other?

Locals did not like Morrieson’s fictional yet highly accurate depiction of their sad grubby depraved little lives. So much so that — despite being the most famous and talented person to ever come from Hāwera and one of NZ’s most successful writers — they knocked his house down to build a KFC.

This is the obligatory photo that, like pushing against the Leaning Tower of Pisa, all tourists must take.

NB: You're not allowed to actually touch the sacred cow. You *will* get tasered by Daisy's security detail if you even get much closer.

Proceed with cowtion.

Daisy is a cruel God.

To appease her violent whims, she demands farmers labour in service of the more than 300,000 cows which live in the region to produce more than 14 million litres milk every day (almost 6 Olympic swimming pools) all sent here, the Pantheon of Dairy Factories.

Hāwera is the Vatican of this cow cult.

Locals make sacrifical offerings here at the feet of their blood thirsty deity Daisy.

While they don’t say who their provider is New World is definitely using facial recognition and some of it is making its way into Auror. NW says it’s only *stored* if you show “harmful behaviour” but still means you’re getting scanned when you walk in to be compared to a database.

And their line Auror doesn’t hold the images/video/information, well why does New World say they’re sharing CCTV and facial recognition with Auror lol once again being completely disingenuous.
October 30, 2025 at 5:38 AM
A while back I wrote about Auror for @davidfarrier.com's Webworm. They didn't like the story (lol) and said they didn't do facial recognition (which I didn't technically say the did at the time)... guess what they're rolling out now.

Hawera is famous for two and a half things.

The first is this decrepit looking water tower — which is often confused for Auckland's Skytower Casino.

HĀWERA: Hāwera is a deeply depressing place. If it wasn’t for my crippling addiction to Lolly Cake (see JJW's Aotearoa Explainer # 4 for more information) I would rather have not stopped here.

Actually there is one more interesting thing about Normanby:

It was originally a stockade from whence von Tempsky (pictured getting his brains blown out) went out to murder Maori folk. Eventually they renamed the area after some British cockhead who was Governor of NZ for a hot minute.

NORMANBY: Look, colonialism already sucks.

But naming a street after some attention seeking German murderer seems a little bit on the nose.

I was there and even got to speak about my love of the bird way back in 2014, when they released the first 59 Tieke into the sanctuary.

Today there are hundreds!

There are heaps of amazing murals in Eltham, including this very good one of a Tīeke / Saddleback.
