After many years of adventure in probation and then Cafcass, I now give my attention to good books, films and watching the Silkmen.
Possibly but it's fighting for space amidst all the other scandals happening in American society
school being canceled because the president sent armed thugs to harass and imprison the populace for voting against him should be the biggest domestic scandal in american history

Refreshing to know there are some politicians in the US that know what's wrong in their society. It isn't just one man in the White House, it's all those who support him and do his bidding
Mamdani: "I am in support of abolishing ICE. What we see is an entity that has no interest in fulfilling its stated reason to exist. We're seeing a government agency that is supposed to be enforcing some kind of immigration law, but instead what it's doing is terrorizing people."

Excellent piece. Good to read about the history behind the Panorama edit, how the beeb has been running scared of right wing attacks with no clear idea of how to deal with it all.
The Panorama edit was poor journalism, not sure how it happened (more than 15 yo when I worked there we all had to go on a course because someone made the Queen look grumpy about something in the wrong order). But of all of it, this is the only piece I’ve read that properly nails the issue…
The reaction to the Panorama edit has been nothing short of hysterical. Yes the BBC has some impartiality problems. But its biggest isn't the one you think.

New piece from me.

Perhaps being 'deeply knowledgeable about politics' is a disadvantage? It feeds into the current practice of interviewers constantly trying to trip subjects up, at the expense of truth & openness. The listener is often sidelined. Too much knowledge can be a dangerous thing?
Whereas now the demand seems to be for people who are deeply knowledgeable about politics but who have never expressed a political thought in their lives and these people do not exist.

Trouble is, although Congress indicted Trump for inciting the Capitol rioters, Senate later dismissed the charges, so he's innocent!
Maybe Keir should demand the heads of major US news networks any time they imply Britain is on the brink of civil war or that we live under sharia law. Or does it not work both ways?

So, how does this work? Govt and police appeal to protesters to call off weekend demo so police can focus resources on protecting Jewish community. Presumably protest ok in future weeks, so where does that leave police protection?

This is so trumpian, "If you keep protesting I'll get rid of you"! Like the proscibing of Palestine Action itself, govt just reacting to events, rather than thinking about consequences.
Police forces will be granted powers to put conditions on repeat protests, the government has announced, a day after nearly 500 protesters were arrested

I am sickened by the relentless demonisation of refugees.

No refugee underfunded a school.

No refugee closed a hospital.

No refugee took away support from the sick and disabled.

We need solutions not scapegoats. Stop blaming refugees and tax the rich instead!

And hang the consequences, Mr Tice? Why do you think people want to come here?
“Sometimes you have to do business with people you may not like.”

@vicderbyshire.bsky.social presses Richard Tice on whether Reform would deport women and girls arriving in the UK illegally back to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

If only we had a government that said publicly what it knows privately: that brexit has failed, that we need to boost our links with Europe, and that raising taxes is vital and necessary (u-turns are justified by changed circumstances). Oh, and immigration has positives
"The economy grows because the population grows; tax revenues grow because more people pay those taxes."

Mehreen Khan, economics editor of the Times, says the government's goals of economic growth and a reduction in immigration numbers are contradictory.

I’m sorry, the DWP announcing “don’t worry, the benefits u-turn means only 150,000 people will be pushed into poverty now!” is just insane. Cruel, incompetent ghouls who shouldn’t be allowed to run a bath let alone a system sick people rely on to live.

The concession by the govt is simply one of timing, putting off changes, creating a 'two tier system'. Details about the amended bill won't be known until 3.30pm today with a vote tomorrow. Not enough time for MPs to digest details/discuss. The bill must be put back.
June 30, 2025 at 10:49 AM
This so-called concession is simply poverty delayed. I'm dismayed that so many Labour MPs have been bought off by the PM, but others may still do the right thing and vote against. Tuesday's vote should be as much a vote of conscience as the assisted dying bill was.
Starmer's concessions, then. Imagine 2 disabled ppl with similar PIP scores. One receives PIP, the other is about to apply. The first is now spared the worst to save the PM's skin. The other will still be immiserated. And note: there are more of the latter (430,000 by 2030) than the former (370,000)
