One thing I'm less confident of now than I used to be is whether Gore-as-president would have represented a better timeline. The wing of the Republican party and a chunk of their voters that was gaining steam under Clinton was going to do their damage anyway, one way or another.

Literally opened comments to say this word for word

Wait which part? Do you feel like the olive-branch-ness helps make her look like the reasonable one? (I don't necessarily disagree, to be clear, I'm just curious what you mean and am not sure.)

Yes, but who knows, it could be (just imagine all the straws are similarly labeled)

That was my exact response. He seems to think "lame duck" just means "disempowered in some way," not the specific meaning it has and which Democrats don't control.

I feel like I have to amend "selection." I am more likely to find cool things for non-ridiculous prices at those locations! But also it's gonna be a lot more sorting through crap. I'm good with that, myself.

I don't think it's sincere for a minute - I think it's cost-benefit analysis. But the off-ramp part still absolutely works and I like to see it for that reason.

Thrift store locations, mostly. Strip malls will have way better selection and prices than the cute shop in the cool area.

He’s the mayor of NYC, so there’s that, but his glad-handing and corruption are a big part of the character and the plot. Especially cozying up to people who are terrible and rich.

I feel like Only Murders and the Keegan-Michael Key mayor character fits in this too? He’s not Eric Adams but he’s not NOT Eric Adams.

The Elsbeth one is portrayed as earnest and well-meaning and handsome (he is being positioned as a love interest - older than Mamdani). He also has a very Jewish name, which is an interesting choice, and is played by someone named Ivan Hernandez.

It's a fundamentally different framing. Us: policy is important, whether a given politician can further good policies is important, details of why things are happening are important. Them: does this own the libs? Cool.

The cropping provides a better headline for a better article. "No, she did. Seriously."

Could I get a link? I haven't found one yet and news sources aren't linking to anything.

it's not exculpatory of America, but I need other folks to realize how deeply eugenics is embedded in immigration policies pretty much everywhere.

You are so good at this generally but your Maureen Dowd ones are just next-level.

Amazing! Is there a text equivalent? Is this two birds one stone? Thank you!

No [drawn-in comma] new wars!
I was told "no new wars"
Per @jenniferjjacobs.bsky.social, DOD presented Trump with plans for strikes in Venezuela yesterday, including on the ground. Astonishing to see the U.S. on the brink of another regime-change invasion with essentially none of the pre-2003 effort to rationalize it domestically and internationally.
