Daily Mail Order Toy Soldiers <Until Christmas>

Cannon Ball (1968) - 64 actual 3D (not flat) plastic soldiers fight a Civil War battle, with Exploding Bridges (rubber bands) and a playmat and rules.

The only ad I know is this one, where it shared it without aniother game.

Characters over Plot ?

'Personality. That is the key, the drum, the fife. Forget the plot' - Chuck Jones

"You don't draw Bugs Bunny. You draw pictures of Bugs Bunny" - unknown child to Chuck Jones

A Funny Thing

So DFS creates the Duracell Bunny in 1973 (beating a drum initially) The trademark lapsed in 1988 (DFS was bought up then) and competitor Energizer made a parody version - beating a drum in 1988.

A lawsuit followed, lea ing Energizer with trademark rights in NA, Duracell elsewhere.

Question for Comic Book Folk

Do you bag *only your single issue / floppies* or do you bag trade paperbacks or digests?

I've bagged a few trades (original sealed ones of things like A Killing Joke) but generally I haven't. They go 'commando' on my shelves.

DFS was a big Madison Avenue ad agency. They bought Gamma animation in Mexico City, and made a lot of 60s cartoons (Rocky and Bulwinkle, etc)

The agency also created The Duracell Bunny in 1973, and McGruff the Crime Dog in 1979
(and the Wendy's Where's the Beef ad)

Young Samson and Goliath is an odd duck, as it was actually outsourced production from big-time Madison Avenue ad agency Dancer Fitzgerald Sample (DFS) - whose own animation studio, Gamma, had just shut down - for General Mills.

Sayings that *are perfectly fine* to keep saying in 2026

Rule of Thumb

Despite allegations its an English domestic violence idiom, 'rule of thumb' is just from tradesfolk using your thumb as a 'good enough' measurement.

Similar phrases exists in German, affirming that it comes from tradesfolk.
Sayings we can put to bed after 2025:

'Wrong side of history'
- this is one thats been popular since 2015.

As a logical fallacy, I don't think it has a name, but its essentially 'Appeal to Utopia' (a inverse of Appeal to Tradition)

What have been your #LCS local comic shops over the years?

My bedrock LCS is this 'Food Mart'

Decades ago, I would ride my bicycle here, on early Sunday mornings, to buy my dad his Sunday paper, and myself a comic books off the spinner rack.

Its the 'LCS' I cherish most.

Walter Black also adapted Robin Hood and Treasure Island for The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo (1964) for UPA

Cat: Meow
<Magoo thinks its a parrot>
Magoo: 'Meow?' Oh, blast it! Parrots don't meow. Quit trying to pad your part. Oh, these actors, always trying to upstage the star.

Walter Black wrote several Jonny Quest (1964) episodes, and all of the Young Samson and Goliath episodes.

Young Samson is partially lost. Of the 26 episodes, 6 are lost, and the others only exist as 10 minute versions of the original 12 minute cartoon.

William 'Bill' Hamilton is a co-writer on all the original 20 episodes of Space Ghost (1966) (possibly working off Ruby and Spears scripts, and with Walter Black), and 10 of the original Jonny Quest (1964) episodes, including Pursuit of the Po-ho (where Race becomes Purple)

This is like a Milo Minara cover. Did Marvel think Tarot was getting too much marketshare?

I also note The Blusky Pearl Clutchers Algorithm did not tag it as Adult Content, so the secret is to use the Captcha idea: Click all boxes with butt cheeks.

This is the 2001 first appearance of Elsa Bloodstone
$62(NM) ⬇️ $34
🔥🔥🔥🔥
FACT: The Man-Thing MCU special introduced Elsa but crickets ever since. Also, here she's blonde and doesn't become a fierce redhead until Nextwave: Agents of Hate.
Still, not an easy find.

In the Jonny Quest episode, Pursuit of the Po-Ho (1964), Team Quest rescues "Emil Hartman" from dangerous natives, the Po-Ho.

Hartman looks like a dead ringer for Michael Rockefeller, who disappeared in 1961 in Dutch New Guinea, and may have been a victim of the natives.
