Daily Hanna Barbera

Over the years, Hanna Barbera had several Santa Claus appearances in Flintstones, meeting Casper and Yogi, and more.

Usually Santa was voiced by Hal Smith.

Smith was Otis in The Andy Griffith Show, and the voice of Goliath (I don't know, Daaavey) in Davey and Goliath.

I like silos

Once you mix in superheroes, other genres begin to wither. Westerns, war, science fiction, high adventure and a lot of horror lose a lot of tension in a world rife with physics-bending superheroes.

Even among superheroes, have 'low-power' settings without the gods.
Anyone have a particularly hot comic take?

Just a shout-out to Steve Ditko. That guy could craft some fantastic designs! One I encountered very young was the simplified Mysterio in the Spiderman cartoon. Also J Jonah Jameson is an outstanding design for a normie.

Coolest character design when I was a wee one?

Probably the Goodwin / Simonson Manhunter

Its the mid 70s, in the Kung-Fu craze. Here is this colorful 'American Ninja', but not just a martial arts fad character. He has disco flair, a European parabellum, and Indian push sword, and cape-like sleeves

Theme song for Droopy, Master Detective (1993).

Musical score by Gary Lionelli (Dexter's Laboratory), and lyrics by none other than Joseph Barbera himself.

Mickey Mouse in Vietnam

After seeing the USA in 1944, Mickey expanded his horizons in 1969 with a brief visit to 'Nam (where he is 'unalived')

The 1 minute protest film is by Whitney Lee Savage and Milton Glaser. It was thought lost, but found in 1998 and is now on Youtube.

But there was a short time in the 1940s when they weren’t always round…

I ppreciate Mickey's ears always being round. It was no doubt very helpful in production, especially for in-betweeners, but it looks just fine.

Apparently, the concept was used earlier in Oswald the Lucky Rabbit too.

1943 Famous (Paramount) Studios promo art for Popeye *in technicolor*. I read these were b&w and then hand-colored.

Listening to the sad tale of Julia Pastrana - a young indigenous Mexican woman with hypertricosis. She became a sideshow performer, but when she died in childbirth - she and the infant were preserved to continue to exhibit her - for over a century. She was finally buried in 2013.

Popeye's The Sea Hag

With Wicked Pt 2 coming out, a look at the wicked witch in Popeye, the piratical Sea Hag.

In preparation for Wicked Pt 2, here is Snagglepuss telling (faithfully) the story of The Wizard of Oz (1965) in 41 minutes of vinyl fun.

Wink wink in choosing Snagglepuss, who is pulling from Bert Lahr (MGMs Cowardly Lion). Notice Daws Butler gets credit right on the artwork.

A version of The Sailor's Hornpipe - you'll know it from Popeye if nothing else.

Music Theory is Incomprehensible!

Mayhap every profession has jargon, but musicians may be peak jargon.

Here is a wikipedia description of the Sailor's Hornpipe tune (you know it from Popeye the Sailor Man)

Huh. So these were apparently a thing in 1969. Sunday Funnies Cola. One side had a comic strip character & the other an actual comic strip featuring them. Several flavors & characters. I need to track down all the cans...

Asimov once categorized science fiction into gadget, adventure or societal impact tales.

Classic superhero books are generally escapist adventure (see: "Reed Richards is Useless", "Why doesn't Batman fix Gotham financially?")

The thing is - there is nothing wrong with enjoying escapist adventure.

Just pondering the power of live action vs animation.

Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord if the Rings, the MCU - all probably have greater cultural power from live action.

Yet hasn't Japan taught us how powerful anime can be in storytelling?

This would be ideal IP to a grand anime.
This is Miyamoto. Filming is underway for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda in a lush, natural setting, with Bo Bragason-san who will play Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san who will play Link (1/2).

Jack Mercer was a long-time (but not the first or only during his stint) voice of Popeye. Beginning in 1935 for the Fleischers, he continued for several studios, theatrically and for tv, up to Hanna Barbera's All New Popeye Hour in 1978.
