I don't like #ai doomposting. It's taking up my work life and my hobby life, but I genuinely believe written fiction faces an existential collapse if the AI bubble doesn't pop imminently. The recent study by Chakrabarty et. al says what I've been saying for months: a lot of people PREFER AI fiction.

Let the games begin!
My judging group, Team 1.21 Gigawatts, has received their allotment for the 5th annual Self-Published Science Fiction Competition (#SPSFC). Very exciting, and looks like a great group of books.

A recent, wonderful review from Julia at BookShelfie that I think acccurately captures some of the strengths and weaknesses of In Sekhmet's Wake. #scifi #writing #superheroes

Caught up on @kierongillen.bsky.social 's incredible #powerfantasy! Had a real 'whoa' moment with Heavy's comment about the arc of justice bending how you bend it, like Blueshift's words in Wake about bending the arc of history if you have the power to do so. What is it with gravity manipulators?

August 5 (hooray, AEST.) #sffchat

Tiger/Sam. A middle-aged Army Ranger lady who's maybe the toughest member of the cast, but also the voice of reason -- maybe. Everyone loves her ability to call out the rest of the cast's BS. If you can look past the blood on her hands. #booksky #writingcommunity

Here are the August prompts!! (:

Feel free to give feedback, as I'm still working out how to do these well (e.g. more of a monthly theme, fewer/more snippets, more variety, no repeat questions, etc).

I know this person doesn't actually believe what they've posted here, but there's something deeply silly about this accusation. Given the saturation of AI stuff, it's galling to be accused of it when Sekhmet is all human (and 40% off!) But this also shows the importance of leaving positive reviews!

August 1. Sab: a frankly terrifying ability to hold two conflicting viewpoints without a shred of self-doubt.

IN SEKHMET'S WAKE opens with a poem. Ever since reading Hirshfield's work, I was struck by how well it resonated with Sabra's journey through the second novel: If you must be heartless to bear it, is it still right to give up your heart? Hirshfield generously allowed me to use it. #writing #poetry

In honor of releasing IN SEKHMET'S WAKE, here's something. Like SHADOW, I have a (bigger) playlist for WAKE. Not much commentary, for fear of spoilers. Posting three now in the following replies. If you've read Shadow, you can probably figure out the relevance. #music #booksky #writesky 1/?

I never quite know what to make of Sam Kriss but, my God, he's fascinating, and this piece is very, very funny. "As everyone knows, the most important truth rationalists have uncovered with their superior powers of induction is that the robot uprising is coming." open.substack.com/pub/samkriss...

Controversial Rhodes #Writing Opinion Time: a 14 year old's shallow take on Adam Smasher is not actually terribly helpful. There are dozens of reasons why we only see one Adam, and somehow I don't think the implications the writers didn't think it through is the most accurate one. #cyberpunk2077

Unfortunately for everyone involved, and especially me, I fear my writing impulses are best described by that one Simpsons clip. "So, you want to write a realistic, down-to-earth story... that's completely off-the-wall and swarming with magic robots."

Sometimes it disconcerts me out that I think the most popular thing I've ever written, beyond a now-deleted Mass Effect fanfic, is a #transformers fanfic that involves me putting far too much thought in to the Michael Bay films (which I love dearly) and having a soldier kiss a motorcycle. What?
