Saying, “Everything happens for a reason,” is emotional gaslighting to a survivor. Do better. The feelings of injustice due to trauma are warranted & must be acknowledged.
Maybe try, “This is so damn senseless and cruel,” maybe add a "f*ck that sh*t." This is what a survivor needs to hear.
