Following his inauguration, Trump hastily signed numerous executive orders including the rescission of 78+ Biden EOs, pardoning of 1,500+ Jan 6 convicted criminals, a freeze on all federal hiring, withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, among many others.

It’s always important to zoom out get the broader context of what’s happening. Nov 5, 2024, should not have been a surprise when taking broader context into account – growing national dissatisfaction, international backlash to incumbency, proliferation of disinformation, etc.
Most important chart in US politics.

A supermajority(!) of Americans have been unhappy with the country's direction for ~25 years.

Dems now represent the status quo. Trump/GOP has become the party of (authoritarian) disruption.

This is not a world where you want to be the status quo party.

Trump likely would have been convicted if Jack Smith’s case went to trial. But after a stunning electoral comeback, his cases have all been ended. Instead of facing possible justice had he lost, Trump will assume the most important position on the planet, the US presidency.
Jack Smith’s final report: “Indeed, but for Mr. Trump’s election and imminent return to the Presidency, the Office assessed that the admissible evidence [post-immunity decision] was sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction at trial”

The Justice Department released the special counsel's report on his investigation into Trump's interference in the 2020 election.

What a great life of service.
Good night, Mr President.

South Korean President Yoon has been impeached by a second impeachment vote after the first one failed which sparked public outrage and protest. Interestingly, in South Korea, an impeachment means that its president will be suspended pending trial. Quite a departure from the American system.

After flipping CA–13, Democrats netted +1 seat in the House. All races are called and the seat distribution stands at 220 GOP, 215 Democratic. The special elections being held next year are in somewhat safe districts but there’s also large uncertainty about the political environment next year.

This era will be studied and analyzed by sociologists and historians for generations to come – and we may not even be halfway through this story.

Among the many things Democrats will need to overhaul in order to be politically & culturally relevant in the future is a generational change in leadership and throughout the whole structure of their party. Voters sent a clear, albeit costly (for everyone) msg to Dems on Nov 5 – Change or extinction
For a new generation of Democrats to step up, more of the older generation of Dems will have to step aside — and I think we need to be more aggressive about forcing that convo earlier moving forward.

Tallying of 2024 ballots continues, mostly because of California. Harris and Trump are separated by 2.5M votes or 1.6%. Trump made significant gains in non-battleground states; however, his lead was slim in most battlegrounds, suggesting a 2+ swing to Harris would have made the difference.

Our democracy is no stranger to adversity, but bomb threats at blue precincts, fake voter fraud videos spread by AI bot armies, and a Director of National Intelligence compromised by a foreign power?

These are not just challenges. American democracy is facing an existential reckoning.

It’s so difficult for me to understand how people could seriously choose Trump over this… This has to be an indication of a very mentally unhealthy society.

I believe that this was the right strategy even though it wasn’t enough this time. It’s also possible that no matter what Harris did, she was always on track to lose, given the global backlash to incumbent parties. But this is important for the future of a more civil politics.

Vice President Harris has been campaigning with Republicans disaffected with former President Donald Trump. But some progressive voters aren’t loving the strategy.

Successfully defending Ukraine is a matter of life and death for global democracy and stability.
If Russia is victorious in Ukraine, Europe itself will face collapse, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a speech at the Diplomatic Academy in Kyiv.

the simple fact is that the “guardrails” of the american system have completely failed. the only thing that has kept us from going over are the voters and we’ll see if that holds.

Even if November 5th turns out well, which I believe it will, you’ll no longer need textbooks and documentaries, exclusively, to understand how Germany fell to fascism and Nazism. What’s happening now in the US is giving you a live lesson in how that initial process unfolds.

Morris has pointed out that fundamentals has outperformed polling for the past couple of cycles and gives Harris a 55% shot to win. So it really just comes down to how much one really trusts the state of political polling at the moment.
academics who closely study elections will tell you that polling has remained rock steady since the switch to harris. it strikes me that if the numbers were reversed it would be treated as a five-alarm problem for harris in political media
