Delighted to have the opportunity to discuss the current influenza surge in today's Belfast Telegraph; the virus itself, what we should be doing to mitigate it - vaccination, ventilation, masks - and how infection control has become ideological.

‘Not a pleasant Christmas for the NHS’: ‘Super flu’ mutation will further stress NI healthcare system, says biorisk expert
The early surge in a so-called ‘super flu’ strain of the influenza virus is going to “dramatically stress” the Northern Ireland healthcare service in the run-up to Christmas, a biorisk expert has said...

What Steve said. There has never been a study in which high-quality, well-fitting masks were actually WORN that did not show a significant impact on disease transmission. Many mask studies failed to take account of post-allocation confounders (non-adherence + non-mask people choosing to mask).
So, to those who say "masks don't work", cite the flawed Cochrane report, insist upon an unfeasible RCT, accuse folks of panic, and undermine public health on social and mainstream media during a flu/RSV epidemic...

Should you wear a mask if you've got symptomatic flu? YES. If you wear it at home *from the onset of your symptoms*, your family members are much less likely to catch flu from you (but you must avoid unmasked co-sleeping and eating around same table - have your meals alone). 1/

So the flu peak was very temporary. Test numbers say influenza in the UK has just jumped back into huge growth this week: +76% up. Sustained, that would be very bad news.

Measles cases have suddenly stepped up too. Don't like either of those.

Some concerning signals of a fresh wave of COVID in Germany, well after the earlier XFG.* peak.

Could be seasonal factors, but that momentum shift looks too sharp IMO.

The rise of BA.3.2.* is a possibility. Note the sequencing data lags by several weeks.

UKHSA positivity has risen to 11.83%.

Adjusted for non-reporting areas, we make that 13.77%.

Fundamentally, the reason I avoid Covid is because all - all - of the elements of my life that bring me joy and fulfillment rest on my cardiovascular fitness and / or my cognition. I'm not going to risk a virus wrecking that, as I've seen happen to way too many people I know.

1. Pandemics shape politics and societies. Collective trauma is a powerful force, as is societal reaction to governmental responses to reduce transmission. This is not controversial; humanity experienced it after The Spanish Flu.
