really eye-opening article
Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on.

Britain’s army of unpaid support has been excluded from the political conversation. I didn’t expect to find hope in a book by a party leader, writes Guardian columnist John Harris

Precious resources we need to support...
I cannot stress this strongly enough: Support your local theatre, café, bookstore, bakery, and library. We breathe life into these places when we support them. They need us, and more importantly, we need them.

Yet another betrayal of voters….and our children. Shameful.
It's hard to get your head around the scale of the environmental vandalism the Labour government is hoping to unleash. The Planning and Infrastructure Bill is up there with Trump's executive orders. And the reason is the same: corporate power.
This week's column.

The horrifying planning bill, which rips up environmental protections, was drafted with CEOs in mind. We know because Keir Starmer told us, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

More people need to understand the massive negative externalities - and huge bloody bills - imposed on the entire world wide web by LLMs.

The sense of entitlement to other people's labour and other organisations's hugely increased monthly overheads of the tech bros is nothing short of depraved.
The Wikimedia Foundation, which owns Wikipedia, says its bandwidth costs have gone up 50% since Jan 2024 — a rise they attribute to AI crawlers.

AI companies are killing the open web by stealing visitors from the sources of information and making them pay for the privilege

I’ve never understood why UK is so obsessed with low tax. If they visited high tax Scandinavia & saw the incredible standard of living for everybody they’d understand that low tax only benefits the rich. When will @teamlabouruk.bsky.social find the bollocks & integrity to be honest about tax?

Four books and a decade of my work in there, stolen by Zuckerberg and Meta.

How can this be fair, permitted, legal???
NEW: LibGen contains millions of pirated books and research papers, built over nearly two decades. From court documents, we know that Meta torrented a version of it to build its AI. Today, @theatlantic.com presents an analysis of the data set by @alexreisner.bsky.social. Search through it yourself:
