Made around 1953, 'Gondolas by the Salute, Venice,' reflects Edward Seago's subtle and nuanced eye; he's painted this Sargent-like work by balancing light and dark and reconciling a multiplicity of shapes, to create a feeling of depth and atmosphere.

An interesting work which depicts John Singer Sargent's dining room at 33 Tite Street in Chelsea, London in 1886. When he died in 1925, footsteps were heard in the house and in his studio in Chelsea, a shadowy figure was seen for several years.

Just a little sketch from a visit to Southampton in 1998. I wandered around looking for something to draw and settled for a quick seascape of the docks with gulls. A cold wind coming off the water.

'Café.' (1948) A big name in post-war British art, James Fitton's later paintings are more illustrative and humorous. Boudoir and street scenes provided him with an endless source of fascinating material; the mere clashing of colours never concerning him.

Painted in 1897, 'Les messieurs en noir,' is a strikingly modern picture for its time yet steeped in an artistic tradition that stretches back to the 17thC. Dutch genre painting with its modest subjects and bold contrasts of light and dark was a key influence on Èdouard Vuillard.
