The cast is outstanding top to bottom not only in name. Each feels inspired as to the men and women they represent. Giamatti, Linney, Wilkinson, are on a whole nother tier..Linney and Giamatti's chemistry is on display even when arguing, as brilliant actors and as articulators of their connection

Everyone immediately jumping to Uncut Gems and yes absolutely, but another movie earlier this year circling that drain in similar fashion, though thr similarities are subtler...Rungano Nyoni's superb "On Becoming a Guinea Fowl"..

Watching Ken Russell's James Bond/Le Carre pseudo serious and John Woo's action Gumbo ..this is what exhilaration and excitement in pop cinema is supposed to be regularly, but regularly isn't...fucking w/ expectations, staying true to the specificity of genre and specificity of their art.

I tend to think of him in terms of Hard Boiled, The Killer, Face OFF, and MI:2, but these two film offer something deeper subtler even in action, while remaining choice examples of how to shoot action...

Watching this and A Better Tomorrow (my favorite Woo films ) I got to see a different side of him, almost demure..at least for Woo...

I said I was learning new things about Woo and Leung, both in the context of action, I've watched Leung through his Wong Kar Wai collabs but I've never seen him in action and the man has just got it, both as a movie star and as a quintessential actor...

All of these mufuckas were ACTING tho, and it was integral to the quality and impact of Woos film keeping it from cheap sentiment and signaling its sincerity.
