Ken Burns revolutionary doc piqued my curiosity about a show I had dismissed on sight - John Adams, and while it remained far kinder in tone to its goings ons than I would be, its sturdiness keeps it from pure romance. Besides that its a gorgeous show and superbly acted...

Everyone immediately jumping to Uncut Gems and yes absolutely, but another movie earlier this year circling that drain in similar fashion, though thr similarities are subtler...Rungano Nyoni's superb "On Becoming a Guinea Fowl"..

Watching Ken Russell's James Bond/Le Carre pseudo serious and John Woo's action Gumbo ..this is what exhilaration and excitement in pop cinema is supposed to be regularly, but regularly isn't...fucking w/ expectations, staying true to the specificity of genre and specificity of their art.

I tend to think of him in terms of Hard Boiled, The Killer, Face OFF, and MI:2, but these two film offer something deeper subtler even in action, while remaining choice examples of how to shoot action...

Still trying to get my arms around this magnificence of John Woo's Bullet in the Head, but things I can say is
A. Tony mufuckin Leung! Sir the ACTOR YOU ARE, THE ARTIST YOU ARE...The complex combination of emotion on display here ..in an ACTION MOVIE..

Norma drops the act quite a bit in film, but she will also turn it up, especially when caged or insulted, and when she does she neither ups the camp or downs it it is a median between her true self and the invention, the marriage and the divorce..she is neither one woman nor the other

Revisited Sunset Boulevard as I am prone to do, and I remain steadfast that too much is made of the theatrical quality and not enough of its purpose, and more importantly of the humanity and more subtle marks in Swansons goaty performance...

Im really enjoying Ken Burns Revolutionary War doc, and Im so-so on Death by Lightning both are incredibly well done and engrossing, but what's lacking in both for me is any layered understanding beyond white folks.

Couldn't tell ME Denzel wasn't running through her on this line reading, especially the nod that accompanies "Everybody pays" in which she drops her cadence and her voice to a whisper...WHEW

But I dont want to reduce Van Peeble's film to its political power or clarity, (a mistake made by many) it is a film made by an artist who clearly had something to say to and abt a very specific time, a very specific subset of the culture engraved in the very title "New Jack" ...

The courtroom scene crystallizes the point but MVP's film is considering "The American Way" long before it arrives there.

Brown mentions the Dominicans and the Columbians as inspirations for trafficking, but while that may be the case in the strictest terms this is right out of the American playbook. The Carter is an occupation, a demonstration of power. The line about the tenants IS America!!

My annual revisit to Mario Van Peeble's "New Jack City" ( more vivid with each watch) and the depiction of the black capitalist, the supposed visionary, and what is being borrowed from their white counterparts, and what is being transformed in the process - is so impressive..

One of the major keys to all these entries is the casting. Not only do each of the Turtles feel distinct from each other, but theyre chemistry is off the charts and they are HILARIOUS for it..
