My book is now officially available to order!

Workable Accents critically explores how international teaching assistants in Canadian universities vocally fashion and contest various aspects of their academic labour.

This article makes a good case for not relying on digital tools when writing. But as someone who works in #appliedlinguistics, I also see it as a testament to the role of #language in crafting and performing #identity.

I’m really looking forward to reading this new article by @scriptingjapan.bsky.social article about #linguisticideologies and #katakana
Hey! I have a new research paper out called "Yokomoji arerugī"! This study examines social beliefs about katakana among both Japanese natives and Japanese learners in the journal Japan Forum. And guess what, it's open access (you can read it FREE)! Check it out @ www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Does anyone have a go-to "here's what AI is & here's how it works" type article? Also looking for more recent "pros/cons of AI in #academia" or "pros/cons of AI for #writing" articles. I'm updating my #AI activity for #linguistics class & what I used before is now old. Pls let me know of any recs!

This is helpful, esp. for anyone new to peer review.
"If you think the topic is not worthy of study, you should decline to do the review"
Exactly! It can be helpful to remember that editors don't send it out if it doesn't have any chance of getting published.
tl;dr: don't be a jerk when reviewing!
Peer review is critical to academia, but few are formally taught how to produce truly useful reports. Here are @adrishaw.bsky.social's tips to produce critical but non-jerky reviews that help colleagues present the best versions of their work.

Was looking thru my 2011 MA thesis on #codeswitching & noticed something...

Each excerpt is 4 lines: Line 1 is the utterance; Line 2 is the gloss, Line 3 is English. Line 4 is paraling info. Lines 1-3 are in the same font, line 3 is in italics and Line 4 is .... wait for it.... in Comic Sans.

This term I’m teaching 2 courses on #Japanese #sociolinguistics. On the 1st day I asked students to tell me what questions they have. One asked “What problem does sociolinguistics solve?”
I’ll definitely be asking them this at the mid-point & again at the end of the semester! How would you answer?

Really want to make this my winter break OOO message!
Thank you for email. As you may be aware, your concerns are now strictly a January problem, and they will be addressed along with whatever fresh hell awaits us all in the new year.

Everyone who works in academia should be reading this...
At @insidehighered.com I wrote about my concerns about this kind of technology as a threat to human instructional labor, but there's also potential pedagogical issues with introducing a 24/7 assistant that may actually hamper student learning and development.🧵 www.insidehighered.com/opinion/blog...

This is (unintentionally I assume) an argument for serif fonts. On my phone, the main different b/w kuchi & ro is size. On my computer, you can see the serifs, so one is clearly kanji &the other clearly katakana.

Using MSWord, compare MS Mincho w/ MS Gothic or ud digi kyokasho & see the differences

Here's what I'm reading this morning.
Among other important points the author makes, I like this one in particular:
""writing isn’t really something you learn or teach—it’s something you practice"
Nnext we need the #languagelearning version of this article.
