Does #linguistic landscape research count car license plates as "signage" or otherwise a LL feature? I would like to know how LL researchers would account for the juxtaposition of this truck, its custom license plate, and the fact that it costs $45 every year to maintain the custom plate...

Next on the reading list (well, this time it's a re-reading list) are: Japan as a Multilingual Society (Hiroshi Shoji) and Language and Migration in Japan (Ruriko Omoto), both in Heinrich and Ohara's Routledge Handbook of Japanese Sociolinguistics (2019).
