How will climate & nature breakdown affect culture? How will culture affect climate & nature breakdown?

The history of the countryside is that it is working land: it has always been the factory of the rural economy. Its historical purpose is not to look nice, that’s just a nice byproduct. Build the damn wind farms. (Happily, they don’t even ruin the visuals, imo. I like to see land at work.)

🧵 8/ A clear delivery plan for nature isn't a nice to have, it's a fundamental part of addressing environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, climate change, and adapting to a warming planet. It can also secure us significant economic and social benefits.

We know the planning system is crucial to enable the delivery of the government's 2030 clean power mission. But it needs to do so in a way that brings the public along on the journey through proper engagement and enhances nature.

🧵 Short thread on the latest @aldersgategroup.bsky.social insights.

Businesses should internalise and improve on their interactions with nature because it bolsters their supply chains and makes it easier to adapt to a changing climate. They should also lean into their improved nature policies because it is political gold dust and CONSUMERS WANT TO SUPPORT NATURE
Nature cannot be financialised; "instead, finance will have to be 'nature-fied'" 🌳 ask me about this (or the cultural significance of Celtic/temperate rainforests in the UK) and you will not hear the end of it.

My article on the value of nature covered here in the BBC: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Cambridge academic says businesses should measure environmental cost
Business must look at factoring in the financial cost of biodiversity loss, a Cambridge academic says.

Resharing this article after the underwhelming COP16 conclusion

Nature is too messy to create a financialised 'market' for because, in part, you cannot quantify the cultural value of nature. However nature is politically potent in a way climate isnt because we connect with nature so personally
"We are not just dealing with a technological problem, but a philosophical one too - how and why do we value nature?"

Biodiversity market: how do you price a panda?
Nature and climate are totally inter-related – but they are treated as distinct in market terms. Aled Jones and Jack Kunkle unpick why, and why this has to change

Where does nature fit within the modern American political psyche?

I've read some takes in the last few days that say environmental issues have broadly been silo-ed into the 'progressive' bucket of modern American politics, which is poisonous for the future of the US and untethered from US history

Lord Deben has a great climate story that links climate change to wetter winters and soggy chips - to paraphrase, if you enjoy your chips with a crispy skin and fluffy center, we need to hit net zero
Right, lets give this a go then shall we

I figured I’d start my time here with a quick thread on what we do on land, food & farming at @eciu.net

Our main focus this year has been on the impact of climate change on this year’s harvest

Spoiler alert - it wasn’t good

Confirmed: England has second worst harvest on record with fears…
Data released shows England experienced it’s second worst harvest since 1983 after record breaking wet weather last winter, with recent downpours leaving many farmers unable to drill crops again

Reducing emissions will clean up the air you breathe and improve your health
NEW PAPER: Decarbonization isn't just about climate—it's also about public health. We find that economy-wide CO2 reductions can lead to widespread improvements in air quality and health benefits, ranging from $65 billion to $250 billion annually by 2035.
