Beyond politics and politically-adjacent things (and even there it’s how relentlessly US-oriented this place is), it’s the lack non-political academic stuff going on here that bums me out. Lots of academic communities were really blown up and haven’t quite reconstituted themselves

The fact that Anthropic is consistently at the cutting edge of SOTA with a fraction the investment of other players is a massively under noticed story.
I'm inclined to agree with the folks that think their hyper focus on model alignment is part of the secret sauce there.
