I'm really looking forward to having a chance to play with this some.

A smaller, cheaper model that appears to be on par with SOTA of six months ago is pretty exciting stuff.

Claude Haiku 4.5, our latest small model, is available today to all users.

On AI & water usage, it looks like all US data center usage (not just AI) ranges from 628M gallons a day (counting evaporation from dam reservoirs used for hydro-power) to 200-275M with power but not dam evaporation, to 50M for cooling alone.

So not nothing, but also a lot less than golf courses.

for real, though, i think the ridiculous inflatable costumes are a major flaw in the armor that can be heavily exploited, portland protestors are leaning all the way into our reputation and making heroes out of inflatable frogs and villains out of the security forces

Vendors in the infosec space are absolutely insane.

Got a ping that somebody from a random vendor is in the lobby of the corporate office -- that I don't work at -- saying they have an appointment with me.

Welcome to permablacklist status. lol

New: Apple banned an app that simply archived videos of ICE abuses. Rather than other apps that record ICE official's real-time location, Eyes Up is to "preserve evidence until it can be used in court." Videos from TikTok etc. Every submission manually reviewed

Eyes Up's purpose is to "preserve evidence until it can be used in court." But it has been swept up in Apple's crackdown on ICE-spotting apps.

My inclination, given past historical performance, is that sama committed to targets he's never going to hit and just got fleeced again.

So, uh... everyone that cared at all about AI safety at OpenAI really did leave and go to Anthropic, huh?
OpenAI employees are very excited about how well their new AI tool can create fake videos of people doing crimes and have definitely thought through all the implications of this

the thing that strikes me about this (good and reasonable) take is that it feels exceptional when somebody has a good and reasonable take re: journalistic objectivity?

not becoming the story doesn't also mean "journalists can't have opinions," yet media writ large seems to struggle with this!
I think if you're a journalist covering a protest, you should not participate in that protest.

This week has seen:

* Karl Rove decry cynical politicization.
* John Yoo say "hol up, this executive action seems illegal to me."
* Ro Khanna attempt to do something without being terminally both sides.

I don't know where up is anymore.
Ro Khanna: "They're making comedy illegal. Brendan Carr pressured ABC to cancel Jimmy Kimmel, and Disney cancels Jimmy Kimmel. This canceling from an administration that lectured us about cancel culture. That's why today I'm introducing a motion to subpoena Brendan Carr."

Gonna take me a while to digest this.

The show they're putting on for the Peel It Back Tour is a very strong recommend for a lot of reasons.

Karl hasn't just been predicting this, he's been largely ostracized by much of the 2A community for refusing to budge on "rights are for everyone."

Unfortunately, it was a canary for where this was headed. And doubly unfortunate that he's in such rare company for actually standing on principle.

The real worry isn't AI displacing junior level jobs.

It's 5-10 years after that when there aren't any new seniors because nobody was afforded the opportunity to develop into a senior.

Companies are already failing to invest in junior employees. We're staring down an eventual labor shortage.

There's opportunity here to do some really cool things with knowledge graphs and web of trust systems.

The hard part is doing it in a way that doesn't instantly get coopted by hustle culture.

But a network based system that pairs personal recommendations and Guy Skills could be amazing.

my father-in-law is a “I know a guy” Guy. sadly all the old Guys are aging out of the Guy Economy. Guys are fundamentally incompatible with Hustle Culture because it’s not about “winning” a deal, it’s about collecting favors and goodwill in a mutually-beneficial cycle. protect your local Guy Economy

This sort of medical ML research was both common and promising before the LLM hype.

Typically traditional ML and adaptive algorithms that have nothing to do with gen AI.

This knee jerk "ChatGPT bad"ism any time the letters AI appear dismisses a lot of important medical research.
Great, now-mundane example of AI hype. Notice the number of "can"s and "could"s here without actual indication of the accuracy of the stethoscope's predictions. This is what the entire AI PR-machine thrives on. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

It's legitimately disturbing how much of the reaction to GPT5 seems to be people upset about losing access to older models like 4o because they've formed emotional bonds with them.

There's a real danger in anthropomorphizing these models, and I'm not sure OpenAI is handling that well.
All I wanted was an option to keep 4o.

To add: my observation so far is that effective use of the tools requires a strong understanding of the actual tasks you're asking it to perform.

It feels a lot like managing a junior, smart, but particularly lazy employee. You have to know enough to be able to spot it going off the rails.
Yes. This is what's ridiculous about the "kids should major in AI" coming from the billionaires. These are superficial tools that anyone could learn to use effectively in a few weeks of on-the-job training. Why not also demand that students major in Microsoft Excel?
I hate the argument that AI is being used in lots of jobs so students have to learn how to use it in school. AI is not that hard to use. Lots of jobs also use job-specific convoluted enterprise software and we don't teach them how to use those in school.

This is like a masterclass in everything not to do with these tools.

If you go through his other tweets, he has the LLM write an apology letter to his team at one point, like that accomplishes literally anything other than burning tokens.

Just fundamental misunderstanding the whole way down.

President Trump, on the other hand, has the power to just completely dismantle the entire Education Department.
