It is time to recognize that no situation is perfect. Aquaculture can provide protein when land is taken up by farms and cities. It's not perfect, but there are thousands of us out there trying to make it sustainable.

Here's part two of my series with @brettfavaro.bsky.social on tips for speaking to journalists as a scientist, this week focusing on things every scientist should know about how interviews work (and do not work). Please read and share!

There is massive corruption at every level of government. As voters, we have to put an end to this. Do deer really need help breeding anyway?

I doubt this will get much traction, but comment publicly and share your opposition. Time to make Texas politician jobs overwhelmingly unpleasant. Sid Miller running fisheries? Come on.

More scientists need to learn how to communicate like Dr. Shiffman. We would be more trusted by the general public if scientists would ditch the lingo when talking to people outside their field. It's extremely important to be able to do this with the press so that your message isn't misunderstood
I've been quoted in hundreds of popular press articles, and many of my colleagues ask me for advice of how to do that effectively.

This is part 1 of that advice.
Please enjoy part 1 of a series of blog posts written by myself and @brettfavaro.bsky.social offering our advice on how scientists can effectively speak with jouranlists about our areas of expertise. Part 2 is coming next week.

Please read and share!

The coolest thing I’ve seen today is that a bunch of volunteer public health professionals and developers have restored the CDC website from before January 20th 2025.

This differs from an archive in that they want to rebuild the links between pages and replicate the full website.

"This decision had nothing to do with legitimate policymaking or government efficiency. It had nothing to do with who can play on high school teams. It didn’t even have to do with fishing."

Of course it didn't, but people also don't want to admit being conned.

Thinking about becoming a scientist? We get to travel. It's conference season, I'm in NOLA for #AquacultureAmerica and got to see a Mardi Gras parade today since they canceled them last week.

Are you or someone you know:

A recently dismissed federal scientist?

Doing science-related work affected by the mass firings and defunding of science?

“You Can’t Fire Science” is a project to illustrate and share those stories: bit.ly/faces_of_sci...

A good follow up to #StandUpForScience!

So many of my newly graduated friends lost their dream jobs in the past couple weeks. People who spent a decade to become experts in their field so they could serve the public. They were unceremoniously dumped like last weeks garbage.

One of the weirdest events at #AquacultureAmerica is always the auctions. They get a couple drinks in you, then show up in this. The #NationalAquacultureAssociation is not what people would expect out of a bunch of scientists and farmers.
