a big part of the "bootstraps" thing is that americans have to pretend that we've earned our rights, so we will always choose the stick instead of the carrot. could as easily argue "healthy people make better workers," but instead we choose "go to work so you can get healthy"
Even if this were true, people deserve healthcare. You can decide to work or not, you don't deserve to die. Healthcare for all no matter what. That's all there is and there ain't no more.
Rep. Steve Scalise says of proposed Medicaid cuts: "35-year-olds sitting at home playing video games, they're gonna now have to go get a job."
"And by the way, that's a good thing for them — their mom doesn't want them sitting in the basement playing video games anyway."

nobody gets a receipt saying "this is less than before due to the GOP." the GOP knows the best way to energize its base is to make life harder for them and continue to attack the left. this isn't new.
The reason why I don't quite get what the GOP is doing is that people receiving Medicaid are a very slightly GOP leaning (R +2 or so) group.
If one assumes lower participation amongst medicaid users, you're still probably looking at 5-7m of your own voters you're fucking.
