Might be too soon to post this since I joined Bsky 2d ago but…

Looking for contemporary/litfic writers to follow (bonus pts if you write YA). It’s been hard to find my people in the sea of fantasy-heavy writing communities so hoping Bsky can finally make it happen 🤞🏾 #writingcommunity

Let me tell you a little bit about the current state of publishing. Every author, trad or indie published, is expected to do hours of self promo. Not too much, or people get salty, but too little and no one knows your books exist.

You have to have a following. People judge you based on that.

telling creators you like their work is less 'if you don't praise they'll stop' and more 'if you encourage they'll do the thing you like'

I don't make art for others, I make what I make regardless, but if someone else is into it I !!!! and vroommmm

it's thrilling to share what makes me happy

Such a great article. Makes me feel less bad about how much I edit as I write 😝
You might be trying to write an entire novel this month! But don't get too swept up in the cult of the Garbage First Draft. And don't obsess too much about your daily word count. Neither of these things works for everybody or guarantees productivity. Write your way!

Anybody who has self-published on Amazon have any tips? Any absolutely "do's" or "nopes"?

I want to make a goal next year to read more. I really miss it. I read 60+ books in 2021 and had the time of my life but haven’t read much since. I read 14 books this year and my goal was 2 so I’m doing better. But I think it would help a lot with writer’s block but also with reducing screen time

I hate when MC/LI get together and lose their spark/banter in favor of romantic/sappy dialogue.
My counter-example: LI to my MC post-kiss: You are hands down the most confusing human being I’ve ever met. I’ve watched documentaries about serial killers that are easier to understand #writingcommunity

I wrote today. I wrote the two climactic kiss scenes that I have been pulling my teeth out to write all week. The torment is over and I can go forward in peace. But I shall share a post-kiss snippet that I actually liked.

how it started vs how it's going

That's the thing with trad pub isn't it? It's about what sells and will make the most profit. Unfortunately rn due to the shift in the dynamics/population of readers (short attention span, not knowing how to read, etc.), tropes are what sell. It's disheartening for those who appreciate the craft.
Hopefully not any kind of controversial take, but I have recently DNF'd (or barely trudged through) three trad-pubbed books that felt like a half-dozen tropes in a dust jacket, and as an author it is making me very frustrated with the state of publishing right now.

This is a good ass question 😂 I want to say yes bc they grew and formed deep bonds with each other bc of them but…in reality they’d probably resent me and I wouldn’t blame them xD
Do you think if your OCs met with you and learnt you're the actual cause of their problems, they'd forgive you?

Ok don't come for me but...I'm going to contradict the post I made literally 15 min ago and attempt to contain the chaos by deciding what chapters I want to write each week. I've been zero drafting Act 3 chapters to sprint to the end, but want to go back and actually write them.
#WeeknightWriters
Q4: What steps can you take in the next week to prepare for #FirstDraftFall? Feel free to share non-story stuff too, like stocking up on rewards! #WeeknightWriters
October 25, 2024 at 12:00 AM
the ending mostly? The pantser in me left no guide for how to end this thing. Can't share too much but it's been tough to figure out how to not make the end fall flat after the climax. And to make the ending realistic but satisfying. While wrapping up the 32 subplots I started 🥲
#WeeknightWriters
Q3: Are there any story aspects/plot points you’re still trying to figure out before #FirstDraftFall? Share them here & we’ll do our best to help you sort them out! #WeeknightWriters

....What is structure? I only know chaos

I'm not working on a new WIP so not really a #FirstDraftFall project. I may use Novelmber to finish this draft of my book (which is *technically* "Draft 1, Version 4").

The semi-short and sweet of it is: Depressed black teen grieves her father's death through her art. 👇🏾

#WeeknightWriters
Q1: What is your #FirstDraftFall story about? Share as little/as much as you feel like! #WeeknightWriters
October 24, 2024 at 11:35 PM
Call me Riane/Blackwell/Ink whichever you please. Writing a YA contemporary novel. My writing week? Well, I, uh...am in the middle of writing the build up to a kiss scene. My days have been a cycle of: open document. type a few words. close document. die of cringe in the corner 😅

#WeeknightWriters
Hello #WeeknightWriters! Come on in, introduce yourself and your WIP, and let us know how your writing week is going! Or not going, that's valid too
