Aalborgensiske Nikolaj Ehlers og Nick Olesen fra Frederikshavn scorede begge i den netop afsluttede kvartfinale mellem Danmark og mægtige Canada til Ishockey-VM, som danskerne vandt 2-1 efter drama. Danmark har aldrig været længere end en kvartfinale til VM, og de var ikke spået mange chancer før opgøret mod Canada, men på hjemmebanen i Boxen i Herning leverede danskerne en sand drømmekamp. Danskerne havde mange gode muligheder mod canadierne, men det var Canada, der kom foran godt og vel fem minutter inde i tredje og sidste periode. Mod slutningen satsede Danmark ved at tage målmanden ud og dermed spille i overtal. Og det gav pote. Først scorede Nikolaj Ehlers det udlignende mål med næsten tre minutter igen, før Nick Olesen skabte den helt store overraskelse med scoringen til 2-1 med 48 sekunder igen af kampen. I semifinalen skal Danmark møde Schweiz i den svenske hovedstad Stockholm.
