"Dr. R, how did you know that wasn't 100 words?"
100 words double spaced is about 3" on a page in 12 point Times New Roman. It's about 3 1/4" in Arial. Also, I knit, so I can eyeball ruler tick marks quite quickly.

Kid 2 (2) threw a sizable wooden truck at kid 1’s (8) head this morning and didn’t miss. Spouse is on a work trip. Our black cat had a major seizure on Halloween. Our house was a tinder box waiting to explode, and so it did 💥

I opened the “social marketing kit” for my upcoming major area’s conference and it’s pretty clear that someone missed the mass exodus of LIS from the social media formerly known as Twitter.

If a patient service representative loudly announces to the waiting room what a patient is there for that’s not a HIPAA violation? Just rude? I’m wondering what we are even doing anymore…

Can AI simulations of human research participants advance cognitive science? In @cp-trendscognsci.bsky.social, @lmesseri.bsky.social & I analyze this vision. We show how “AI Surrogates” entrench practices that limit the generalizability of cognitive science while aspiring to do the opposite. 1/

ASIST published their proceedings early, so here’s the paper I’ll be giving next month in DC: asistdl.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
The tl;dr: don’t train AI with data of sketchy provenance and expect it to do well, or expect the actors taking such shortcuts to make the tech sustainable.

Recording a tutorial for *nix and editing the AI-made transcript. "dir.conf" is not "directs continue," "dir confirms," "direct dotcom," or any other weird permutation.

I’m happy to report that the most seriously taken threat I’ve ever made as a parent was to Kid 1, now 8: if you can’t find it within yourself to be a good, kind, and inclusive helper we will be watching nothing but Mr. Rogers Neighborhood for the next week #millennialparentingwins

Recent discussion: mentoring is a learned skill. I started my postdoc about five years ago with a goal of learning to be a good mentor. I have spent a lot of time in workshops on mentoring/being a mentee & I really wish this had been available for folks 30 years ago.

Masking EVERYWHERE INDOORS that isn’t your home is an act of resistance.

No one is coming to save us. We need to save each other by masking, getting vaxxed, and advocating for clean air

1 way masking is great, but 2 way masking (when EVERYONE PRESENT is masking) is best.
Wear a face mask when you go out in public- if for no other reason than knowing that they want you too sick, too exhausted and too burned out from dealing with back to back respiratory infections to speak up for yourself & your community. You deserve to protect your health.

Epistemic arrogance is the attitude of overestimating what one knows, leading to unwillingness to learn from others.

Epistemic arrogance is especially harmful because, via the “concealment effect”,
it prevents the testimonies of marginalized individuals WHO KNOW from being heard and believed.

Had a check-in with my director where she described some of my service this year as “voluntold.” I can’t think of a more apt description for being cold-emailed for input on new policies that haven’t been released to the general faculty outside of my contractual work dates. But it was important.

There are many zombie statistics in metascience but for the first time I read a general claim that *73%* of social science findings cannot be replicated. Why are folks still so attached to the "replication crisis" narrative that they'll just confidently make up numbers to support it?
