We warned you that self-driving cars would just create self-driving traffic jams, and here they are.

The car industry has no solution to the shortage of space in cities. Public transit, cycling, and walking are all part of the answer, but cars are not.
Waymo privatized another public street:

Chanel approaching 4th, San Francisco

Possibly queued for a Billie Eilish show at Chase Center ~half mile away.

The light rail train on 4th seen passing in front of this roboherd has more passenger capacity than all of them combined.

In today’s least surprising local news, speed display signs aren’t enough to make our roads safer.
Speed display signs only slow drivers down by 1km/h: Halifax report
Halifax has installed nearly 50 speed display signs around the municipality, but on average they only slow down drivers by less than one km/h, according to a new staff report.

SB 195 in Utah, designed to halt street safety projects in SLC in the name of the mighty car, was founded on a false premise. Traffic hasn’t gotten worse and people’s perceptions of safety projects are positive and neutral. Hope this study puts an end to the state interfering with our streets
UDOT finds Salt Lake road projects created little impact; mayor still promises 'change'
A much-anticipated study of recent Salt Lake City road projects found little impact to this point, but the city plans to make adjustments to other findings.

Unrionically: go trick or treating. (NOT trunk or treating.)
A third of Americans don’t know their neighbors and 45% have no interaction with their neighbors. But that doesn’t mean people are opposed to the idea.

To begin bridging that gap, start simple: Organize a block party.

Fascinating study. Note that this is 1 in 10 adults. Factor in children and the percentage of non-driving Americans is much higher. Cities and towns need to account for their mobility needs too.

Among U.S. adults, those who live in the Northeast (17%) are more likely than those in the South (10%), West (8%) and Midwest (7%) to be nondrivers.

Dearest Martha,

Here upon the war-torn byways of the Oregon Territory, we have borne witness to such deprivations as can hardly be described. Children wander the streets, seeking what sustenance can be found from makeshift tents, the meager produce of local farmsteads.

City of #Boulder has concluded its mega #parking reform.

Parking minimums are now gone. So all those patches of 200 square feet that home-builders have been required to install at a cost of $30,000+ per space can now be used for other things like vegetable gardens, bike parking, and housing.

Hard to overstate how transformative the 9 Line Trail has been for Salt Lake City. This May, sensors recorded 37,000 trips by walkers, cyclists, and runners. That’s almost 1,200 people per day, on average. So many cool businesses are popping up along the trail. Kudos to @slcmoves.bsky.social

Our family has downsized both our vehicles in the last few years (will soon be down to one mid size vehicle). Our house in the last month is 1/3 of its previous size and we are way better off for it.
Innovation makes useful things smaller and smaller. Overconsumption makes things bigger and bigger (and more dangerous with bigger costs & consequences). Bigger vehicles and larger homes for fewer people is not progress. HT @fietsprofessor for graphic

Governor Cox is saying a lot of the right things, but not doing them. This article also seems stuck on talking about min lot sizes as a solution, rather than eliminating single-family zoning, which will have far greater impact

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.

For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.
