We live in a society despite the claims of Starmer yesterday & Thatcher years ago. Below an example of myself & my neighbours & friends from 2021 in Kenmure Street, Glasgow, not being "an island of strangers."

Like Ludvik Jahn, #KunalKamra refused to apologise for a joke.

Rajendran Narayanan draws parallels between Kamra's controversy & Milan Kundera’s ‘The Joke’.
From Stalinist Czechoslovakia to Modi’s India, why authoritarian regimes hate laughter
In the attacks on comedian Kunal Kamra, there’s an unsettling echo of Milan Kundera’s ‘The Joke’.

There are several instances of events in the UK that are reminiscent of Russia's descent into authoritarianism in a most concerning way. This policing fashion is the top one. This is the stage when the public must demand change, because slowly but surely the grip gets tighter and then you can't.
🚨 Outrage as 20 police officers break into Westminster Quaker Meeting House and arrest six. 🚨
This shocking violation of a place of worship is a direct result of crackdowns on protest and dissent - freedom of speech, assembly and democracy are at risk.🕊️

BREAKING: The UK Government is 'pitting refugees against each other', a Ukrainian campaign group has said

It comes after Keir Starmer said it was 'wrong' for a court to give a Gazan family the right to live in the UK

On denying refugees citizenship, I’m choosing my response really carefully.

It’s cynical.

This issue has been pushed on GBNews the last weeks, because the new Borders Bill actually repealed unused Tory legislation that imposed the requirement to remove anyone who arrives irregularly. #r4today

Labour MP @jessasatomp.bsky.social's assisted dying bill amendment requires all medical practitioners involved in the process to be trained in spotting domestic abuse

Writing in The House, she writes that the bill "places far too much faith in the infallibility and competence of professionals"
The assisted dying bill treats professionals as infallible – they aren’t
Anyone who has dealt with domestic abuse cases knows professionals often fail to spot it. My amendment to the assisted dying bill will require all ...

Ongoing protests in Serbia have broadened their scope to public broadcasters, and teaching staff appear to have joined students

Massive student-led protests in Serbia have been going on for 2 months. A force that could roll back anti-democratic trends. And they need our attention and support.

Daily reminder that the underlying purpose of AI is to allow wealth to access skill while removing from the skilled the ability to access wealth.
Anyway, AI has already stolen friends’ work, and is going to put other people out of work.

I do not think a political party that claims to be the party of workers in this country should be using it. Even for just a silly joke.

Pleased to see the assisted dying bill recieve its second reading this afternoon.
Now the bill will go into committee and those who are concerned about the drafting can submit amendments. It will be interesting to see if critics will engage constructively, or if they will continue to simply oppose.

1. The implicit deal behind Starmerism was this: you might not like what he stands for (or fails to stand for), but at least he knows how to win elections. If you want the Tories out, he’s your only hope.
But now? It’s as if he’s going out of his way to lose in 2029. 🧵

Currently stuck on a train approaching Coventry station. Apparently a suspicious package had been found on another train and the station was evacuated.
Been about ~30mins. I have never wanted to get to Coventry quite this much.

US experience of private equity controlled hospitals.

A pattern of profiteering, inadequate staffing, service cuts, diminished care.

Yet UK govt is handing hospitals, GP surgeries to private equity.

Say no to privatisation of the NHS.

"they look like homes for rich people" is exactly why it won't happen in the UK. There is no generosity in the institutions of this country. The poor must be punished for their poverty. Everyone agrees.
'there’s a level of imagination and determination in some of the best European projects, combined with a breadth of vision that includes the social as well as the functional aspects of housing, that our risk-averse public agencies have yet to match'

Anyone who thinks our benefit system is too generous, has clearly had their common sense surgically extracted by the Daily Mail.
Losing your job is financially catastrophic (esp for mortgage payers, who drop to just 12% of an average wage overnight). And our sickness benefits bill is similarly mean.

Considering the quality of the previous government, this is actually kind of impressive
