This late great blue heron (most have headed south by now) struck me as both cold and cranky. Seen along the icy shores of the St Lawrence river right before dusk. #birds
A great blue heron in profile, on a cold November beach, all dead tan rushes, grey rocks, icy white snow, and brown mud. The heron is large, a mix of darker and lighter greys, with a wicked looking long strong beak and a yellow eye.

A turkey vulture perching on the metal strut of a power pylon, beautiful rich orange fall foliage behind them. The bird is large, feathers shiny and various shades of black, bronze, and tan, their naked head vivid pink with slight purple markings, their beak the same pink except for the white tip. The vulture is looking over their shoulder, creating a pleasing angle to their body, which is mimicked in the lines of the metal parts of the pylon, framing them in slanting angles as well.

I saw my first winter wren and fell completely in love with them. #birds #borbs

Sitting at a picnic table, I watched this american redstart (female) hop from branch to branch, before, to my surprise and delight, I saw them settle into this nest. I never would have seen it otherwise! #birds

It's a goose's world, we just live in it. #birds
Two Canada goose goslings, slightly older larger ones, a few adult feathers just barely starting to push through all the downy fluff. They're in tall grasses, the further one obscured by plants, while the nearer one is seen mostly from behind but at a bit of an angle, their fuzzy head turned to the side. It looks like the photographer is following them into a secret goose world in the grasses.

Killdeer ballet.

A tiny killdeer fledgling in tall grass. The bird looks a lot like the adults in markings: white and light brown with black markings, though only one black ring around the neck instead of two. However their eyes are yellow instead of red, their head is large compared to their body, and they look wonderfully small and fuzzy.

Perfectly goofy #birds

A screenshot reading: My dedicated project of learning to identify the birds I encounter has come to feel like the merest possible courtesy I can offer. Not necessarily their taxonomic classification, though that can be part of it, but the knowledge unlocked by my ability to name them. Are they residents, or migrants passing through on their way to somewhere else? What do they eat? Where do they nest? What habitat do they prefer? What do they need from us? An end to the ongoing destruction of habitat, every time, but there’s always more complex understanding needed in order to know the best way to halt and reverse declines. The act of naming does nothing on its own, but recognition seems like the first step: seeing my feathered neighbours—or cherished visitors on continent spanning journeys—for who they are, and understanding them as beings worthy of a world they can thrive in.

I visited a bog a couple of weeks ago, it's a magical landscape and that visit just increased my slowly building bog obsession. I want to go on bog roadtrips so I can visit more bogs!

Skunk cabbage season!!
Skunk cabbage pushing up out of the brown and grey forest floor, the only visibly living thing around. It's a strange looking plant, a cluster of large, curved, pointed, fleshy looking red flowers rising up, finely streaked with yellow.

After many months of anticipation, I finally got to see sandhill cranes when they stopped nearby on their migratory route. They were every bit as delightful as I'd expected! #birds
