Climbing, cycling, sailing & napping.
Over the past 20 years I have sailed over 10,000 sea miles in yachts. I don't think that I have ever listened to the shipping forecast while at sea. The forecast is clearly very important, but nowadays accessible from a phone. To me it is functional, not poetry🤓

Editorial: ‘Around the Bay of Biscay and back for tea’. The weather bulletin has inspired poets and popstars and become our national lullaby

A very useful summary.
What can the Dutch teach the world in creating places where cycling is pleasant, safe, and common?

🚲 Separate bikes from cars
🚲 Complete a network
🚲 Embrace the ‘bike street'
🚲 Redesign intersections
🚲 Discourage driving
🚲 Communicate the benefits

"Climate change, nature loss and food insecurity are all inextricably linked and dealing with them as separate issues won't work, a major report has warned." Yet another important report that will be ignored😕

IPBES report sees climate, nature and food challenges interlinked
A new approach is needed to tackle the interlinked crises afflicting the planet, scientists warn.

With plans for the Labour government to build a lot of new homes, I wonder how many will have quality walking & cycling routes to the schools, shops & cafes?

Ouch😵‍💫 Looks like I need a new pair of cycling bibs. At least it was a lovely day🤓

20mph is plenty in most residential areas.
Good to hear this excellent "Lancet Voice" podcast with Dr Sarah Jones of Public Health Wales talking about the national 20mph default in Wales which has just won the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for the Welsh Government.

This is what quality infrastructure delivers.
Great news: Cycling in London is gaining momentum.

Every day, 1.33 million journeys are made by bike in the capital—that’s an increase of 26% since 2019.

I’ll keep working hard with boroughs to make our streets even safer, encouraging more Londoners to travel on two wheels.

The Media won't acknowledge this video of the farmers blocking an ambulance with its blue lights on so could you could RT it so people see it?

We definitely need to see more continuous active travel paths across side roads.

Homelessness in England has risen by 14% according to Shelter.

Labour's focus on building private 'executive homes' will not solve the problem.

The Green Party would build genuinely affordable social housing and bring in rent controls to tackle to root cause of homelessness.

Not seeing any right-wing folk screaming that drivers of these slow moving motor vehicles don’t pay “road tax.” (Tractors don’t generally attract vehicle excise duty.)
The first tractors rolling into Whitehall - how European. (PS do tractors not need number plates?)

A new roundabout is now operational at West Bar, Sheffield. People on foot or bike can safely negotiate a busy junction. Motor vehicles keep making good progress, so everyone's a winner🤓

One of my life's missions to see more hooks in the world.
This is a fine example of what I'd like to see more of🤓

Today at 0930, via my NHS app, I ordered a repeat prescription from my GP at Tramways, Hillsborough, Sheffield, UK. At 1007 I received a text from the pharmacy to say that it was ready for collection. This is an outstanding service🤓. Thank-you NHS.

We need farmers, but not the greedy ones.
Here’s a short story about who wins and loses from the status quo of our inheritance tax rules - and about, what you might politely call ‘sub-optimal’ journalism🧵

Bikes are great
A person on a bicycle is by far the most energy-efficient among animals and machines per distance traveled relative to body weight. The bicycle is magic.

Kendal, a lovely town, but like so many, it is dominated by the car. The main shopping areas have busy roads, 30mph (+) traffic and very few crossing points for people on foot.

From what I understand, sheep farming in upland areas, such as the Lake District, is both uneconomical and environmentally damaging.
Over 90% of the U.K. used to be rainforest. The “rolling hills of grassland with sheep on them” mostly used to be rain forests.

The U.K. has a very long history of extremely destructive farming.

And when they invaded Ireland the practise was done there too

Paris is doing great stuff to get people cycling. Not just by building bike lanes, but also making it a bit more difficult to drive a car.
If you build it, they will come.
That’s as true for #bike lanes and #cyclists as it is for cornfield baseball diamonds and ghost ballplayers. 🚴🏻‍♀️👻⚾️

(When is Kevin Costner getting on #Bluesky?)
READ: “3,337 Parisians were equipped with GPS trackers to record their journeys…for journeys from the outskirts of Paris to the center, the number of cyclists now far exceeds the number of motorists, a huge change from just 5 years ago.”

Evidence of leadership.

My GP surgery. They are a good bunch & deliver great care. However, access on foot is rubbish with no protected footpath. Plenty of space for cars though. We need better active travel access to healthcare.
