Emergency Department (ED) staff: screen ALL patients over 65 for delirium.

Emergency departments are where it's most missed and most dangerous.

Make it as routine as checking blood pressure.

There is a U-shaped relationship between BMI and the risk of postoperative loss of independent living.

Patients with mild obesity experienced a lower risk of losing the ability to live independently after surgery.

Shocking reality: 1 in 4 older hospital patients develop #delirium, yet most families have never heard the word.

We need to do much better in improving public awareness of delirium.

Let’s try a little #MedSky game. When I finished med school:
-gastric lavage had been scrapped for ODs
- Doxapram was still used for T2 resp failure in COPD
- co-danthrusate was widely used,
- Quinolones were magic and only consultants were allowed to prescribe them.

What year did I qualify?

- we wore white lab coats with nice big pockets
- H. Pylori was starting to be linked to ulcers (yes I did gastro house job)
- vagotomy with Pyloroplasty was a common treatment for GI bleed

We told my Dad frequently that he had delirium & that it was because he was unwell, 2 years ago.

I think it did help, & he volunteers to us regularly now that he’s had strange experiences. He’s got definite dementia now, but I’m happy that he isn’t inhibited in telling us when weird stuff happens.
