NAP8 will be collecting data around complications of regional anaesthesia next year covering all UK for 12 months. Here’s hoping serious complications are really unusual but sadly we know they happen @rcoa-cri.bsky.social #AnSky

More seriously, perhaps AI and smarter technology might be of benefit in reducing the risk of fatal local anaesthetic toxicity. This reporting database study from the US highlights this rare but potentially catastrophic complication still occurs. #AnSky bsky.app/profile/bjaj...
US #FDA local anaesthetic-associated deaths statistics from long-acting #localanaesthetics decreased in the last decade but remain unchanged for #lidocaine

The crunch question for the AI-guided-laryngosopist is of course what its firmly held evidence view is regarding cricoid force. bsky.app/profile/anae... #AnSky

In a highly unusual turn of events anaesthetists are arguing about the role of cricoid. bsky.app/profile/anae... Blow me down with a feather!
"It is perverse that cricoid force has been abandoned selectively by many clinicians for not representing evidence-based practice when, compared with [other RSI elements], it is cost-free, better reasoned, has less potential for harm & more evidence of efficacy."

‘Anaesthesia was the most frequent provider (36% of cases) but also with delivery by proceduralists and on wards (Fig. 5b).’ Without knowing the context of frequency of LA use (especially with potential for higher doses) difficult to ascribe any concept of relative risk #AnSky

There’s lots we don’t know about delirium. To help researchers ask the right questions, not necessarily the ones we think of, it is really valuable to have the input of clinicians, patients, carers and others. So click the link and tell us what you think. #AnSky www.surveymonkey.com/r/WTHNBZK

Our UK SNAP3 cohort of older surgical patients reported delirium occurred in around 1 in 16 overall and 1 in 5 for those living with frailty. It’s not just those with hip fracture either. Older age, emergency surgery have higher risks #AnSky #SurgSky www.bjanaesthesia.org/article/S000...

Postoperative outcomes in older patients living with frailty and multimorbidity in the UK: SNAP-3, a snapshot observational study
Older surgical patients experience longer hospital stays and a higher risk of morbidity and mortality than their younger counterparts. Frailty (19.6% of cohort) and multimorbidity (63.1% of cohort) in...
