Another state that jumps out: Washington.

—Seattle's mayor's race
—also big stakes in Seattle's prosecutor + council + tax measure
—new exec in King County
—control of Spokane
—Olympia's labor measure
—competitive legislative specials
—school boards split on inclusion
—even a statewide referendum

In cities where there isn’t likely to be investment available for badly needed service improvements AND free fares (sadly, that’s MOST cities), I strongly prefer strategic ridership-focused SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS, along with reasonable fares (and free fares for under 18, over 60, and low income). 3/

How much of downtown Seattle is just queueing space for the freeway?

Retired Deloitte consultant asks why we are building a housing plan around a failed transit system. “The president of South Korea declared martial law and was beaten back. We can beat this back.”

Let's be clear about the difference between
1. Big 'A' Affordable housing-where either const cost or rents are SUBSIDIZED by generally public money to be below what the market would bear, and
2. little 'a' affordable housing-where size, type, age makes it LESS EXPENSIVE than average).

So they did study just putting an old fashioned 4-way stoplight here, but they threw it out because it has the potential to slow drivers down a whole 2.5 minutes.

It’s a shame they didn’t study this exact idea but with a (Dutch) roundabout instead.

Some choice quotes in this study… Love the chicken and egg logic here: “people say walking/biking across the ballard bridge sucks because the sidewalk is only 3 feet wide, but nobody is even walking across the bridge anyway, so clearly 3ft is sufficient”

This was by far the most disgusting comment.

She said “a gentleman said we have to build housing where people want to live. Well, I want to live in Paris, haha, and we can’t all live where we want.”

She’s celebrating that people “below” her can’t be her neighbor and hoping to keep it that way.
“Queen Anne is full. It’s tapped out. There are other places close to downtown (Rainier Valley, White Center) and density can go there instead.” [applause]

The irony of this comment…

School closures are on the menu due to under-enrollment.

There’s under-enrollment because *families can’t afford to live near schools*
Audience member says they can fight the upzones. “The school district was going to close schools but people fought it and they backed down.”

it me, i’m commenter.

that was terrifying.
Commenter says this is a good plan and it isn’t going to destroy our neighborhood.
December 5, 2024 at 4:48 AM
This is tonight! Please attend if you’re able, and voice your support for more housing in one of the neighborhoods closest to the job centers of downtown and SLU.

We saw a preview last night of the resistance to housing at the Phinney/Green Lake CC meeting (c/o @typewriteralley.bsky.social).
ANGRY MOB ALERT. The Queen Anne Community Council is hosting an in-person(!) public meeting at the QA Community Center, this Wednesday at 7:00pm, to discuss proposed upzones.

This is frustrating for a lot of obvious reasons, but one that I think gets less airtime is that transferring from 4th Shallower to non-Link services (like Amtrak/Sounder) would be so much easier than it will be from Freeway Station or “Midtown”.
At the Sound Transit board's system expansion committee, any remaining case for a 4th Ave shallow tunnel in CID is essentially being put to bed. The options are being presented as virtually the same when it comes to ridership, with 4th Ave taking years more for construction with intense risks.

Literally how is it a "false choice" if Saka wants to defund transit (Streetcar) and spend $2M to fund an *illegal* left turn (for cars) that personally benefits him.

It's the opposite of a false choice. A true choice? Removing funding from one place and putting funding in another.
"This amendment is principally about safety, and addressing inequity," Saka says in defense of his amendment. He's decrying the "false choice" of pitting different modes against each other.

He points to the school being a recipient of EDI funding, and calls it a "pillar of the community."
