A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

study after study after study shows that literally just handing people money and telling them "do what you want with this" reduces homelessness, increases food security for children, makes it more likely people will find and retain jobs.1

My daughter’s costume this year was “ribbon-cutting cereal gone wrong.” I love that she shares my absurd sense of humor and also has the energy and confidence to go through with her ideas instead of being like, “Wouldn’t it be funny if…”

Halloween rules. Watch horror movies for a month, then one night have some drinks, dress your kid like a cartoon character, walk around in the dark knocking on strangers’ doors to ask for candy, and meet your neighbors, who are in silly, scary or horny costumes. 10/10 holiday, none better.

Going full Andy Rooney here, but I am goddamn sick of how shitty and user-hostile remote controls are now. The main buttons -- volume, play/pause, channel up/down, etc. -- are tiny and buried among random shit that exits you from the show. It’s a Chinese psy-op to keep us a little grumpy.

Haha remember in 2016 when there were rubes saying with a straight face, “He’d be corruption-proof — he’s so rich he doesn’t NEED any more money!”
President Trump is demanding that the Justice Department pay him about $230 million in compensation for the federal investigations into him, reports The New York Times.

And neither he nor anyone from his regime will be held accountable, in the unlikely event Dems ever regain power. They’d wring their hands over being characterized by Trump-aligned media as doing their own version of this. Not that they’d have the stomach for de-Nazification anyway.
Exclusive: A group of dozens of officials from across the federal government, including US intelligence officers, has been helping to steer President Trump's drive for retribution against his perceived enemies reut.rs/3IXEVG9

I’m getting a shit ton of texts asking if I’m going to be at the No Kings Protest tomorrow. Are these from Dems who want me to sign up for fundraising emails and texts for the rest of my life, or something more sinister? There’s not any good reason to respond, is there?

This is great. “Free speech warrior” comics admitting they were told not to mock religion or the government when performing for the journalist-murdering Saudis and then complaining about “cancel culture” is a sick joke.
I'm a "glass is half-full" kinda guy, so let's look at the upside of the Riyadh Comedy Festival: We never, ever have to even pretend to take any of these "anti-woke" "free speech warriors" seriously, ever again.

Will Anti-Woke Comedy Recover From the Riyadh Festival?
Any event that includes comedy’s biggest names is going to attract attention — but the Riyadh Comedy Festival, which kicked off on Sept. 26 and continued through Thursday, is disproving the adage that...

Emily bought black garlic when the store was out of regular cloves and I said, Haha, what is this, regular garlic that went bad? Just read about it and turns out yep, pretty much. And it’s delicious! Still have a lot so I’m experimenting with recipes. Thus far it’s best by itself on a cracker.

One Battle After Another fucking rules. It is all the big crucial things critics say it is in the context of This Moment in History, but more important, it is also a blast - thrilling, beautiful and funny. I implore you to see it in theaters.

I didn’t see the Wired essay this is responding to, but regardless, the thread is a fascinating introduction to the work of a cyber Cassandra
1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it).

But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that
